An $82.34 dinner comes with a suggested $32.92 tip—that’s nearly 40% on top of the bill. At that point, it’s understandable to wonder whether tipping still feels like a gesture of appreciation or has started to feel like an extra expense.

Servers deserve fair wages, and excellent service should absolutely be rewarded. But as food prices continue climbing, should customers also be expected to cover an increasingly large portion of workers’ income?

Tipping should be about gratitude, not pressure.

If customers are routinely encouraged to leave 30%, 40%, or even more, perhaps it’s time to look at how restaurants structure wages and compensate their employees.

Servers absolutely deserve fair compensation, but diners also deserve clear, upfront pricing without feeling pressured into paying twice for service.

Servers need more than appreciation to make ends meet, but customers are also struggling with rising rent, groceries, gas, and everyday expenses. That’s what makes the tipping debate so complicated.

Workers can feel frustrated when tips fall short, while customers can feel pressured when suggested gratuities keep climbing. Yet neither the server nor the customer created inflation, the cost-of-living crisis, or a system that depends on tips to close the gap.

Most customers want to treat workers fairly, and most servers are simply trying to earn enough to support themselves. In many ways, both sides are dealing with the same financial pressure.

Owning a home should feel like true ownership—not like continuing to pay year after year for the right to stay in a property you’ve already paid off.

Property taxes help fund schools, roads, emergency services, and other community needs, but they can also become a growing burden, especially for longtime homeowners on fixed or limited incomes.
