Oh Basel. I still can’t figure out whether I adore or abhor you, despite the fact that you are almost always very good to me. I love bobbing down your Rhine as much as I dread your Protestant cuisine (excluding my daily nussgipfel from KULT, and always, of course Chanthaburi). Your monolithic institutions are so “world class” it’s sinister, but your Cubans and Brazilians brighten your flawless parks and streets with unruly bursts of sonic color. And then just today, before catching my train, I discovered a hidden cafe in a shaded churchyard full of a rare, narcotic peace. I might have stayed there forever.
