“Why do we stop?” she shouted, fighting the wind.

“The storm is winning.” He pointed toward the cliff. “We shelter there.”

Jini strained through the blowing snow. At first, she saw only stone. Then the mountain seemed to open its mouth. As they approached closer, two colossal Buddhas emerged, carved directly into the living rock, their faces softened by centuries of weather and prayer.

Her father had spoken of monasteries hidden along the Silk Road where monks welcomed strangers from every kingdom beneath Heaven. She had always believed those stories had grown larger in the telling. They had not.

"The Sogdian house had stood upon this road longer than The Road had a name, and it met the caravan with the incurious calm of a place that had weighed every kind of cargo on its scales and been moved by none.

Three rings of mud-brick, weathered to the color of old bone, guarded the goods within. The high wooden gate opened only when the lead camel had been known at twenty paces, and closed behind them with the heavy authority of a place that did not trouble itself to belong to the country it sat in.

The noise of it came up all at once; the bray of camels, the ring of a smith somewhere in the inner ring, voices layered in tongues she could not separate."

"Her father opened the lid of an ancient stone box that sat next to the board. A gift passed down from his great-father, she knew not to touch.

He took a single black stone between his thumb and forefinger and placed it on the board with the soft, definitive click that was, to her, the sound of an adult making up his mind.

“The game is called weiqi,” he said. “We will play it now. You will not master it today. Such skill is earned.” Her heart trilled in anticipation.

He took a second stone and placed it. Then, turning the box of white stones toward her, he motioned for her to make her move. . ."

"Inside the inn, the contract was waiting.

Coz pushed it across the table. Lady Yang sat. She did not read it. She had read it the night before, twice, by the lamp in the kitchen while Jini lay counting cracks in her ceiling. She lifted the brush, dipped it, and signed her daughter into his keeping with the same unhurried stroke she used to mark the household accounts.

“I am entrusting you,” she said, “as if we are still a family of privilege.”

“My word is my oath,” said Coz.

“Help her find favor with a daughter who will show her grace.”

"Bing was sixty and leathery, with a grin that showed more gum than tooth. Her ivory skin crawled as his sunburnt eyes took her in with the practiced assessment of a man pricing livestock at a county fair.

Jini took her place between her mother and Hana on the low couch in her ceremonial red gown, which stiffened her like armor and fit about as comfortably. It troubled her greatly knowing Lady Yang’s finest gown would veil a transaction intended to help her half-brother fleece any shred of dignity the Wu women had left. . ."

Jini's mother had never produced a son. Not for the old emperor, not for the General. Only daughters. And now succession law had done its quiet, dirty work. The land, the title, all had passed to Yuanshuang, her stepson, a man who savored her failure. He had already used Hana, bartering her for a new steed. The baby sleeping in the cradle was evidence of that transaction.

That left Jini.

Her defiant, unready Jini. . .

"Unlike other girls her age who only dreamt of flight, Jini demanded it. She pushed Shimin harder than any village boy dared.

She rode sideways at first, one leg hooked over his powerful back, her chest rising and falling with the thundering of his hooves. When her Hanfu flared in the slipstream, revealing the boy-style trousers beneath, she felt nothing but the wind. Let the matrons could glare. Shimin was running, and for this moment, the world was entirely hers."

History, in its infinite piety to our patriarchs, was never written for women like us. Constructed by Confucian recorders about men who played high-stakes chess on the backs of their daughters and called it duty. Masquerading our silence as loyalty, our obedience as virtue. Recording what was given and what was taken, then peddling it as the advancement of civilization.

Most would say I bested my own odds. On the heels of being bartered by my stepbrother to a toothless farmer… traded for the right to plow land that had been my mother’s… I was to be a third wife before I had lived a single day as my own woman. That was the plan. That was the system, operating exactly as designed.

I had other plans. They say I was ruthless.

Let them.
