Part II: The trace’s origins. No, this isn’t a radioactive early cola ingredient. This is phosphor, atomic number 15, which has a brightness that is already a memory before it becomes visible. A memory of excitation of light. This is nature’s early RAM, and nature’s prototype of a recorded LP. It’s an early energy storage primitive that contains an afterglow, ready to release after a delay.

An LP sings after the singer is gone. The phosphor shines after the sun has set. This is the trace: the persistence of a difference, an archive of energy. The archive precedes the archivist, and there is a strange economy of retained information and released performance. This is the underlying principle we all work with in audio and visual work, consciously or unconsciously.

Music is a trace. A trace of a groove, re-animated from something that happened in the past, a new apparition that we experience together on playback. I used to sit in a trance with records for hours as a kid, trying to get at the core, tinted through the light of the layers of recorded art: the tape, the room, the mics, the crackle of the record. Re-animation of a shared experience.

Sorry haven’t been on IG much. Been working on something head down for the better part of 2-3 months. Any guesses? Those that know please don’t spoil…

Posted • NEUTRAL POETRY: First Recordings, Unreleased Demos (2009-2010) is out today!!

While we were working on Face Down In The Garden, Patrick found a box of unlabeled cassette tapes in the attic. They turned out to be 4-track recordings from the earliest days of our band, including the original versions of Marathon, South Carolina and Baltimore — the songs that launched our career back in 2010. We re-recorded them for our debut LP in 2011 because we were insecure about how lo-fi they were. We tried our best to duplicate what we liked about the demos in the studio, but the re-recordings lost some of the magic—something we’ve always regretted. Though we would never write anything like this today, these demos contain aspects of ourselves I wish we hadn’t lost touch with. The youthful exuberance! The total lack of self-consciousness! We didn’t care about doing anything the right way. All my vocals went through a guitar pedal and it sounds like I am singing to you from underground one hundred years ago. Some of these songs aren’t even songs— just outlines of ideas that hint at potential. Stumbling upon our first recordings while working on our last felt like a moment of cosmic symmetry.

We decided to release Neutral Poetry alongside Face Down In The Garden as a way of bookending our career, to show the progression of our sound from first recordings to last. Thank you for listening over these many years. 🤍🤍🤍 Neutral Poetry is streaming everywhere now.

Today we are very excited to share Takuro Okada’s first release on Temporal Drift: “Reflections/Entering #2”, the first single from the forthcoming album The Near End, The Dark Night, The County Line. 

is a Tokyo-based musician who’s made a name for himself over the past decade as a guitarist and producer in Japan’s indie and jazz scenes. His boundless approach effortlessly navigates between varied styles and arrives at the intersection somewhere between Americana, ambient, and free improv. Some of you may have seen him backing Yuma Abe on his recent U.S. tour (they’ll be back for more shows this year in December). Needless to say, we are thrilled to be working with him on his first release outside of Japan. Stay tuned for more details about the album.
