Edymade by Edy Pickens Levin Edymade reflects Edy Pickens Levin's art and other creative endeavors. Wise, a prolific painter, and her mother, Ange Pickens, a gifted pianist.

Edy Pickens Levin began her artistic journey in South Carolina where she was influenced by her grandmother, Edythe S. After she received a B.A. in studio art from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia and an M.F.A. in painting from Indiana University, Edy moved to Los Angeles, where she began teaching at Brentwood School. For the past two decades, Edy has been developing an interdisciplinary sty

le that expresses a pantheistic empathy with nature and, more specifically, an impassioned connection to horses and rural landscapes. She often finds herself reconciling the differences and highlighting the similarities between her rural Southern roots and the metropolitan behemoth she now calls home.

What if you’re not mired…
what if you’re incubating?

A red egg.
A lotus.
A spiral imprint held inside a field of stars.

This piece began as “mud” and evolved into galaxy.

Sometimes what feels dense is not regression.
It’s formation in deep time.

If you’re in a heavy season, this is your reminder:
The spiral hasn’t disappeared.
It may just be gathering strength.

This is what growth feels like now.

Not breakthrough.
Not reinvention.
Unfurling.

I photographed this fiddlehead fern mid-spiral — still tightly coiled, but already becoming something larger. The pattern follows the Fibonacci sequence. It doesn’t rush. It opens through proportion.

That’s what nervous system healing feels like.

Not collapsing.
Not striving.
Not forcing expansion.

Trusting my competence.
Releasing what I can’t control.
Widening my window of tolerance.

The coil isn’t disappearing.
It’s reorganizing.

Growth isn’t a climb.
It’s integration.

I used to think of Maslow as a pyramid — something to ascend. But lately, I’ve been seeing growth differently.

The image I’m sharing here, Pinnacle (2002), is a black paper cut of a horse rearing atop a form rising from the sea. At first glance, it looks like triumph. Height. Achievement.

But the sea surrounds it.
And most of the structure is implied beneath the surface.

Elevation depends on foundation.

This week’s Analog Intelligence essay explores what it means to secure the hull before opening the sail — and why safety and structure are what make creativity possible.

This one feels special.
I’m honored to be featured in VoyageLA’s Inspiring Stories series — a space that highlights the quieter, behind-the-scenes journeys that shape creative lives.
This interview reflects the long arc of my work at the intersection of creativity, education, and healing — and the trust it’s taken to keep showing up, even when the path wasn’t clear.
Grateful to share this chapter. 🤍

Cutting. Pausing. Pressing.
Additive → reductive → additive again.
This is how the work moves lately—
from digital to analog, from edge to center, from holding to release.
This time-lapse follows the beginning of a stencil process,
where orientation matters as much as action.
The full reflection will be live on Substack on Monday morning:

A hummingbird teaches reciprocity better than any textbook.
Wings moving so quickly that giving and receiving become indistinguishable.
This piece emerged alongside a deeper reflection on Analog Intelligence, Psyche’s Loom™, and The Architecture of Hope—how balance is built, not forced, and how exchange becomes nourishing when it’s alive.

These images have lived with me for a long time.
Two charcoal illustrations from Thumbelina:
one waking up to water in every direction—small, stunned, afloat in uncertainty.
another leaning back, allowing motion—trusting momentum without denying effort.
And then the Knight of Pentacles.
Not dramatic. Not fast. Just steady. Present. Still here.
Together, they tell a story I recognize deeply:
awareness before resolve.
discernment before trust.
perseverance without self-abandonment.
Hope doesn’t always look like optimism.
Sometimes it looks like staying.
Sometimes it looks like learning when to open—and when to root.
