Bodies in motion. A guitarist at the center — held,
surrounded, pulled into something larger than himself.
Figures dissolve into each other and into the music.
The boundary between player and song, between self
and community — gone.

Rigoberto Soltero is a self-taught artist from Jalisco,
Mexico, whose work is inspired by the enchantment he
observes in the world — deeply shaped by the indigenous
paintings and beadwork of the Huichol people of his
home region.

His canvases are alive with animals, moons, hearts,
and music. Faces blend. Animals transform into human
forms. People soar through the air with no solid
ground beneath them.

His last show at Ave 50 sold out. This is his return.

What does art look like through the eyes of the
people who have spent years championing it?

Avenue 50 Studio's Board of Directors — current and
emeritus members — present a special exhibition that
brings together the artists they admire most. Each
Board member has selected two favorite artists,
offering a glimpse into their personal artistic
vision while highlighting and supporting the creators
whose work inspires them.

REQUIEM FOR GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED MURDER OF
"ALIEN" BODIES — Jeong
Traditional Korean altar | 2026 | Dimensions variable
Codex of the Migrant / Codex del Fuego

This work commemorates the 57 people killed because
of what the artist calls a ruthless, dehumanizing,
and uncivilized reign of terror on our communities.

We understand that there have been more casualties, we are starting
preparations for an updated altar in October with
our annual Dia De Los Mu***os programming.

The paper flowers reference the Korean folkloric myth
of Princess Bari, who resurrected her deceased parents
using three magical flowers. The red string represents
the East Asian concept of the "red string of fate" —
the divine thread that connects us to the people in
our lives.

You are invited to enter the altar space.
Offerings welcome.

MAMA CARRIED ME — Brenda Chi

"Displacement towards immigrants and Black and Brown
folks is a story as old as time and that's part of
my Codex too. What can we learn from our Codex is
to show our histories, fight back and do what our
ancestors were not able to do."

Chi's mother fled Vietnam by boat. In this painting,
she is symbolized as a ceramic bowl carrying Chi to
safety. The bowl also references the displacement of
Old Chinatown when Union Station was built — and the
Chinese ceramic remains uncovered beneath the tracks
decades later. Evidence of a community nearly erased.

ABBY ACEVES — Codex of the Migrant / Codex del Fuego

Three paintings. Layers on layers.

La Magia (2025, oil, cold wax, epoxy clay, and leather,
12 x 12 in) — the magic. Present in every surface,
every material that resists until it doesn't.

Fortaleza (2025, oil, epoxy clay, and leather,
18 x 18 in) — fortitude. Strength worn not as armor
but as skin.

Ella (2025, oil, cold wax, and leather, 30 x 30 in)
— her. The largest work in the series. A woman of
color in the full complexity of her inner life.

a medium that slows you down, that makes you commit
to the moment before you press the shutter.

Colores del Barrio (2022, 35mm film photograph,
15 x 9 in) — the colors of the neighborhood.
What deserves to be remembered.

Colors of Resilience (2025, 35mm film photograph
on mercado bag material, 15 x 9 in) — printed on
the kind of bag carried by hands that do the work
this country depends on and refuses to honor. Soto
makes the material part of the message.

Fourth-generation Zapotec weaving artist. Every color
hand-dyed from natural materials. Every thread a
thread of memory.

"When my hands are over the loom, I can feel her
returning home. When I weave we are together again —
she is here with me."

Jaguar de la Esperanza (2026, tapete, hand dyed and
hand woven, 23.5 x 39 in) — the jaguar of hope.
Woven into permanence.

La Union Hace la Fuerza (2026, tapete, hand dyed and
hand woven, 32 x 59 in) — unity makes strength.
The largest tapete in the show. A tradition passed
down through generations, now on these walls.

but toward a self that is fully realized.

"A soul yearning for a better life leaves behind the
entirety of what they know in hopes of finding
themselves in a new situation and, ultimately, a new,
enlightened self. My work is an examination of my
personal migration to self."
