1984? Harry Kipper (Brian Routh) of the Kipper Kids and The Dark Bob of Bob & Bob. "Two halves of a whole" is what Hunter Drohojowska-Philp called us at the time. After more than a decade of working exclusively in our respective "art teams", we were beginning to explore our solo work. The "other" Kipper Kid had run off and gotten married to Bette Midler and the "other" Bob had moved to New York. So what can a poor boy do?
Brian and I bonded because of our unique experience of being in an "art world" TEAM. There are not a lot of them. Although humor was the hallmark of our collaborative work, Brian and I were both very serious about bending the boundaries of art. We shared a rebel spirit and a love of art history. Brian was super talented and deeply soulful. As his solo work began to evolve, I was a huge fan of his visual art and his songmaking. He's been an inspiration since I first met him in the '70's. A parallel brother in arms.
We always talked about collaborating, and shortly before his death we had written the script for a huge performance event we planned for LA. We managed to pre-record one of the bits where we were having a nonsense conversation that eventually made it's own kind of "sense". We were thrilled with that piece and we could see the performance coming into shape - and then Brian's health took a turn for the worse. His battle with cancer was epic.
I'm not saying he chose this fight. Cancer threw the first punch, and Brian stood his ground for as long as he could with courage, stamina, humor, art and above all - LOVE.
I can say with certainty that Brian's wife, the brilliant artist and superhero, Patricia Routh, was the best thing that ever happened to him and he damn well KNEW IT! So when I saw this old flyer from Lhasa Club, I suddenly remembered in detail the night we shared the stage. A Kipper Kid and a Bob! It was a "moment" for both of us. Because of Brian and a few others, I've learned that people die, but love lives on. XO
Wow...longest post I've ever done....sorry...
