As we approach 20 years of HVW8 Gallery Los Angeles, we’re digging through the archive and revisiting some exhibitions.

January 2010 - ‘Ecstatic Moments’ with Mos Def / Yasiin Bey, co-presented by Union LA and Frolab.

The exhibition featured photographs by Cognito, capturing rare performance and behind-the-scenes moments from the two-year journey of creating and supporting The Ecstatic. The album takes its name from the novel The Ecstatic by Victor LaValle, with a still from Charles Burnett’s Killer of Sheep used as the cover artwork.

Cognito’s photographs span studio sessions with Madlib, OH NO, and Georgia Anne Muldrow, performances in São Paulo and South Africa, and late-night moments with Jay Electronica, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, and Shuggie Otis.

First image: Yasiin Bey at the exhibition, standing in front of a 1928 photograph of a Moorish Science Temple gathering in Chicago.

Combining photography and fabric, Sy transforms images into dimensional works inspired by the collages and layered magazine imagery that captivated her as a child. Her pieces are designed to be experienced in person.

French American photographer Selly Sy, who lives between Los Angeles and Dakar, explores identity, culture, and the diasporic experience, examining what it means to belong to multiple places at once.

A beautiful night of family and friends for the opening on Selly Sy ‘Au Fil du Lin’.

Selly Sy presents ‘Au Fil du Lin’, a series of staged photographs conceived as a unified body of work. Drawing from the different worlds that have shaped the artist, the series revives cultural traditions and reshapes them into contemporary, personal expressions.

Lace serves as both the thematic and visual thread connecting the work, a textile rooted in Sy’s earliest memories, a cherished traditional craft from her mother’s region in Normandy, and an ornament that evokes femininity, tradition, and the evolving experience of womanhood. By combining photography with fabric, Sy recalls the collages and layered magazine imagery she was drawn to as a child. The resulting works feel expansive and tactile, transforming photographs into dimensional objects intended to be experienced within an exhibition space rather than as flat images alone.

Final Week to visit Karl Hab’s ‘24H Los Angeles’.

Originally published and exhibited at HVW8 LA in 2016, ‘24H Los Angeles’ became a defining visual study of the city, tracing its rhythm from sunrise to night. Built around a continuous 24-hour structure, each photograph is timestamped and geolocated, creating an unfolding portrait of Los Angeles through light, movement, and atmosphere.

Ten years later, Karl Hab returns with a new exhibition featuring previously unseen images and new perspectives gathered over a decade of shooting the city from street level to the sky. The work moves from early morning arrivals at LAX through the shifting geometry of downtown, into golden hour across the hills, and late night along the coast.
