TOMORROW! Make Room presents Tรชte-bรชche, an exhibition of painting, sculpture, and furniture by seven artists and designers who live in Los Angeles and grew up elsewhere: Aleza Zheng, Daniel Wang, Tianlian Liu, Xiangxi Zhang, John Wu, Yuri Yuan and Studio Paul Chan with Jeremy Kim. The work shares no subject. What it shares is a body of pictures each of these artists took in early, Hong Kong cinema and Japanese film and animation for the most part. Depending on the artist, that was the world outside the door or something that came at a distance, on a screen and in translation. And each arrived carrying a different set. Those pictures surface here as a way of handling a room, a table, a low light, a figure that has just stepped out of frame, in work that is otherwise about other things.

We're excited to debut artist Xingzi Guโ€™s Los Angeles solo exhibition "Periphery Dream." The show opens September 12, 6-8PM.

Xingzi Guโ€™s figures are waiting: adolescents on the cusp of adulthood, two people unsure whether tenderness is approaching or passing, solitary figures sitting in unknown feelings. They seem content to yearn. For Gu, waiting is its own answer; it hardly matters whether Godot ever comes.

Gu builds waiting into the making of each painting. Built from thin layers of acrylics, their paintings can take more than a year to complete. During that time, Gu lives alongside a possibility - resisting a pre-fabricated narrative. They prefer to be on the edge of making a mistake, where a spontaneous stroke can lead to a twist in the story. Shifts in opacity, a characterโ€™s expression, and the texture of the surface reflect decisions made over time, turning the canvas into what Gu calls a โ€œrecording machine.โ€

The booth gathers a generation of artists working in controlled sentiment. Romance, in their hands, is not a subject but a way of paying attention: to a borrowed match, to an iron left mid-task. Feeling enters these paintings through technique rather than declaration. Airbrushed veils, thinned washes, charcoal dust, and stained canvas replace the loaded brush, so that emotion arrives as atmosphere, held at the temperature of restraint.

Its forms unfurl like the tendrils of a deep-sea organism, part creature, part architecture, reaching outward as if testing the boundary between one self and a shared one. What first reads as digital precision is, on closer looking, the slow labor of the hand: a rendered world relearned in oil, breath by breath.

Like much of Chanel Khouryโ€™s practice, the painting holds the biological and the sacred in the same frame, drawing on ancient holy sites and the strange intelligence of comb jellies and siphonophoresโ€”beings that live as both individual and collective. The anemone becomes a meditation on adaptation, on how a body survives by opening itself to something larger.

Ancient reference and futuristic surface meet here in a closed loop, where the tactile re-enacts what the machine first imagined.

The title is John Bergerโ€™s, from a book he published in 1984. โ€œThe visible brings the world to us,โ€ he writes there. โ€œBut at the same time reminds us ceaselessly that it is a world in which we risk to be lost.โ€ The exhibition takes that double motion as its premise. Each work here shows something and, in the same gesture, marks the distance the seeing cannot close.
