INTERNAL COLLISION

I grew up with my parents’ BMW 315, a car they had bought new and which later became my first car. Long before I understood the automobile as an object of engineering, architecture or design, it was already part of my personal landscape. It represented childhood, movement, family and eventually independence. Years later, on December 31, 2016, a car accident radically altered that relationship. INTERNAL COLLISION brings these different layers of memory into the same structure. The automobile becomes both an object of origin and an object of rupture. Art, here, operates as autobiography.

The damaged vehicle is transformed from an object of destruction into sculptural matter, a wounded machine reconstructed as structural memory. Concrete masses, black cables and mechanical components pe*****te, support and restrain the body of the car. The cables operate as multiple systems simultaneously: repair, intervention, transmission and mechanical dependency, but also the externalization of an internal nervous system under stress. Machine, body and memory begin to occupy the same architecture.

INTERNAL COLLISION is therefore not a representation of a single accident. It compresses childhood memory, attachment to the automobile, physical impact and reconstruction into one object. The BMW becomes an autobiographical body whose deformation carries several moments of a life simultaneously. An external machine becomes internal architecture. A personal history becomes structure.

POPE X is a sculptural continuation of the historical exercise initiated by Diego Velázquez with Portrait of Pope Innocent X and radically transformed by Francis Bacon through his Pope paintings. Within the RIM SYSTEM, the figure leaves the surface of the painting and becomes a physical entity. The body is reconstructed through black plastic, cables, straps, hardware and mechanical components. The traditional papal figure is no longer represented through flesh or paint, but assembled as infrastructure, becoming a WARDEN suspended between body, machine and architecture.

Francis Bacon’s Pope, painted around 1958 during his stay in Tangier, remains the starting point for this interpretation. Rather than reproducing Bacon’s image, POPE X continues the same exercise through another material language. Anatomy becomes structure, fabric becomes plastic membrane, gesture becomes transmission, and the throne becomes a support apparatus. The authority of the Pope is preserved, but transferred into the controlled presence of a technological entity. POPE X is not a sculpture after Bacon. It is the continuation of the Pope as an artistic problem, transmitted from Velázquez to Bacon, and from Bacon into the RIM SYSTEM.
