3. Audition technique. This year my coaching clients have booked more roles and bigger roles than ever. How do we collaborate together? What do we focus on? I’ll take you behind the scenes.

Been sitting on this for so long! So happy to have been part of the casting team with Emily Schweber and Tom Keegan on this iconic game! A lot of talk about how an AI program is out there wanting to replace Casting Directors…🤖how a program can scrape for the “best actor for a role”. Really? 🤔There has always been data crunchers out there who try to reduce an actor’s talent to some kind of number. But that is not casting. AI can’t feel the things only humans can feel…that moment where an actor makes you fall in love or in hate with them. 🥰😭😡Those goosebumps, that gut punch, that edge of your seat reaction we have in the moment and that we look for in a performance. AI can’t do that and producers shouldn’t want it to. There are many many legendary stories of actors who on paper were not “right for the role” but who ended up cast as some of our most cherished characters. Casting director John Frank Levey has plenty of these gems in his book “Right for the Role” (which everyone should be reading!). 📕John sat down with me recently for my podcast Killer Casting to talk about one such casting story. He fought hard for the wonderful Noel Fisher to be cast in the now iconic role of Mickey Milkovich on Shameless. Noel broke the mold, defied expectation and convention with his audition. Well then you have loved the work of the wonderful, inspiring John Frank Levey who put some of the most amazing actors into some of the most iconic tv shows in history. John’s new book “Right for the Role” dives deep into his career, sharing his journey navigating Hollywood as well as the origin stories of how the casts of his shows came to be. In our conversation, I ask John about how casting has changed, and we compare notes on some of their favorite performers.

I love LIVE auditions and I try to hold them as often as possible these days (via Zoom), but I also do send out self tape requests at the same time, so I can see many more people and give more people the opportunity to shine. 🥰Recently I put out some appointments for a live audition via zoom, but a lot of Actors are traveling and away for Summer fun, and they really wanted to self tape. ⛱ ☀️ 🧉However, a few reached out to me that since they are away, they don't have access to readers. 😒 Hmmm, what to do, what to do. Well, there are actually lot of different options out there -- some are free. Some are avail for a small fee. (Perhaps this fee is offset by the high price of gas you would have paid for driving to an in person audition). 🚗 Anyway, because there is an APP for everything, I wondered if there was a good app for actors to use in a pinch. And viola, there is! ColdRead is an app I had never heard of but seems like it could be very very helpful. (I am not paid in ANY WAY to endorse this product). There is a free version, and a monthly version for a smallish fee. 💰See if this is something that could give you more peace of mind for your self tapes. You record the lines of the scene into the app, then the app knows to play back ONLY your reader's lines, in whatever pace you set. ....>>>>>And, if you want to know a way to make your voice as the reader be totally disguised 🥸...well, I found an app for that too...more later....
