So many of us wake up every morning blanketed in the protection and safety of this country which I choose to believe is and has always been great. How truly blessed are so many of us who have never known the pain and horror of oppression. How lucky we are to have been born in a country where we can speak our minds and voice our frustration or admiration for those issues that we agree and disagree about. How very, very sad that so many of us cannot find empathy for the millions and millions of people all over the world who do not wake up under that same blanket of safety. Why would someone choose a journey more dangerous than any we can comprehend unless they have no other choice if they want to keep themselves and their children safe? I understand that there are no easy answers. Our immigration laws need work. What has struck me over these past several days isn’t the discord over why and how to improve those laws. What has overwhelmed me is the lack of empathy for those whose lives are nothing like our own. The ease with which so many can say “not my problem.” I pray for those who are fighting for a better life and choose to make the ultimate sacrifice for themselves and their children. I pray that the children who have been separated from their parents are reunited now. And I pray that those who have not and will never know what it is like to walk a single step let alone a mile in their shoes, will look into their hearts and find love and compassion.
