Meet Studio Eleven artist Elise Vazelakis

In her latest series “Driving With My Eyes Closed”, artist Elise Vazelakis uses ancient twining techniques to transform discarded Amazon packaging into abstract sculptural forms. By weaving synthetic waste intro, her work examines the tension between slow, deliberate making and our fast, disposable culture. The series invites viewers to consider what we preserve, what we throw away, and how our everyday habits shape the world around us.

Meet Studio Eleven Artist Laurie Yehia

My current work, in gouache and graphite on wood panels, is an exploration of geometric synchronicities, interconnections and reflectivities. Underlying grids and symmetries of sacred geometries give stability and balance to a kinetic interplay of open space, forms and lines. This work is informed by sacred geometry and related concepts.

Previous bodies of work have focused on the relationship between material objects and the non-material. Switch plates, windows, electric cords, light and other repurposed objects were featured in constructed paintings and installations. Also, large oil paintings with aggregated collaged paper pieces were painted on stretched raw linen.
Laurie Yehia is a visual artist based in Los Angeles, California. Her artwork has been exhibited, recognized with exhibition awards and is held in private and public collections and museums nationally and internationally. She studied painting, drawing, photography and printmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Stanford University, Wesleyan University (Connecticut), the School of Visual Arts (New York) and the Tom Wudl Studio (Los Angeles Arts District.)

Developing another side of herself, Yehia earned a J.D. from the University of Southern California, where she co-authored “A Federal Statutory Scheme: Speculation, Defacement and the Residual Interests of Visual Artists,” published in Entertainment, Publishing and the Arts Handbook (1985). She practiced law with a boutique firm, a Fortune 500 corporation, a small music entertainment marketing company and finally Quantum Leadership Solutions, LLC, which she and her husband founded. During this time, she raised three sons.

A founding co-chair of StudioEleven Artists, she co-curated its exhibits in its formative years. Yehia currently is Vice Chair of the Santa Monica Arts Commission, and serves on its Media Arts Committee and Public Art Committee.

Harmonies and Dissonance: StudioEleven Artists at Colburn
10/5/25 11am-2pm
Colburn School - Courtyard 200 S Grand Ave., LA

This exhibit expresses, in diverse ways, the refuge of creativity in times of change and conflict. Artists’ studios and the process of making art become sacred places in the midst of chaotic external events. Works in the exhibition reflect harmonies and dissonance, elements that co-exist in the creative process as in the world.
