What a pleasant surprise to be featured on the official IG account for CalArts on Juneteenth.

I’m not really used to receiving my flowers in the art world, at least on this level…

So I’m a little taken aback by this but some tears have definitely dropped.

BOLD JOURNEY: OVERCOMING IMPOSTER SYNDROME

It’s always an honor to be contacted to share my story as an artist.

This one is extra special, as I reflect on my growth and accomplishments from this year alone, as a well rounded creative.

I wasn’t going to post this once it went live (imposter syndrome)…BUT I checked another project off my artist bucket list.

When I transitioned into digital art 3 years ago, I never thought that I would like illustrating more than painting. Over the last year or so, I’ve been trying to figure out what I wanted to do with art full time. After reflecting for a bit, I decided that eventually I’d want to do collaborations with brands, but didn’t know what they would look like or how long it would take.

Fast forward to August 2023, I was approached to illustrate for a Nationwide project. I tried to talk myself out of it but I went ahead and did it anyway.

Here’s the final product! These baby hands of mine continue to open doors that I would’ve never imagined would open for me. Just keep swimming. Oh, and stay tuned for the next episode. You might see these hands again 🫣🥹.

In partnership with Nationwide, "Grit & Grace" tells the stories of everyday people who are at the forefront of initiatives and platforms that are fighting to alleviate social injustices in Black communities around the nation. Episode one features Lauren Von Der Pool, a healthy living advocate, food...

Where do I even begin.

It’s been almost 3 years since I’ve held a paint brush (my Apple Pencil has been holding me down since the beginning of the Pandemic). So you can only imagine my panic and fear when randomly hit up to say that his mentor was going to reach out to me for an art opportunity. When Shon told me he knew someone that needed an art mural painted, I told him “I’ve never done one before”. He still encouraged me to talk the call, so I did.

I literally tried to talk myself out of the opportunity and told me in so many words “yeah I’m not trying to hear that….I’ve seen your work…”

The week of planning for my first mural, I got a call that my oldest uncle had suddenly passed away. The guilt of me being in LA trying to find my purpose while never coming home or reaching out, quickly took over. I wanted to give up and just sulk, not spend 48-72 hours painting a mural.

But my mom & my rider encouraged me to do it anyway…as it might serve as a distraction before flying back to Chicago to bury my uncle.

So I did just that. Both my mama (who drove from Vegas) and Keish came to help me paint that weekend. Spending 10-12 hours day with me and my antics 😩. I pushed through grief, anger, fatigue, cold weather (cuz why it’s been so chilly here 😒), and driving 30 mi both ways to knock out the majority of the mural before that following Wednesday.

This is the end result. I still honestly have not processed that I created the FIRST Black History Month mural at the California Institute of the Arts. I am the FIRST Black artist to amplify the underrepresented group of black students. And if I’m not mistaken, I’m the FIRST non Cal Arts students to create a mural.

I just want to thank and the entire for welcoming me and pouring into me…especially during a time of heightened emotion for me. The “thank yous”, the hugs, the joy have not gone unnoticed.

I am forever grateful. Thank you for believing in me and never letting me quit. 9 year old Ieesha, who had notebooks full of character drawings, would never believe this. 🫶🏽💜

So I originally created this based on the theme of female leaders for an art gallery exhibition.

Long story short, I decided not to submit my work (for various reasons) but still thought I should share with my audience.

Although this isn’t an exhaustive list, I wanted to highlight black female leaders who I personally feel have been game changers in their respective industries.

Who do you consider to be a “pioneer”?

Hey FB family. I've challenged myself and submitted my work to Fine Art America's Billboard contest.

Below are the 3 digital illustrations that I submitted to the contest. Please vote for ALL 3 using the 3 separate links below. Each illustration that gets at least 100 votes automatically moves on to the next round, where I could be selected to have their art printed on billboards in major cities! I would like to all 3 to make it to this round to increase my chances of being picked.

I would love your vote and support! Please note that you will have to sign up for a Fine America account in order to record your vote. It takes at most 2 minutes to do so. PLEASE DO NOT vote via Facebook as I have learned that they may not be going towards my actual vote count on FAA's website. I do believe that you can only vote once for each piece I have submitted.

Thank you so much!
