L. Ron Hubbard Winter Wonderland In 1983, L. Ron Hubbard gave Hollywood a towering Christmas tree to lift a neighborhood struggling with blight. Made possible by the Friends of L.

Over 40 years later, that gift keeps giving in big and small ways—a reminder that a single act of goodwill can reshape a city. The tradition began in 1983 when Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard provided a 60-foot Christmas tree as a gift to the children of Hollywood. The tradition has continued ever since and the Winter Wonderland holiday village is constructed each year as a service to the community. Winter Wonderland opens on the Sunday after Thanksgiving and signals the start of the holidays in Hollywood. Ron Hubbard Foundation, the set attracts upwards of 40,000 Los Angeles residents and tourists each year.
