With all this Niu Lai stuff going on, I’m reminded of this painting I made over a decade ago for my “Revenge is a Dish” series. When I heard this song, combining Kanye’s “Flashing Lights” with clips from the Niu Lai movie, I just had to pair the two and post.

Hair
When cramming for a solo show, the first thing to go for me is grooming. Haircuts, shaving, combing—all out the door. And why not? It’s not like I’m going out in public any time soon.
So while I was working on last months Negative Space show at Corey Helford Gallery, I found myself thinking about my increasingly disheveled appearance. After all, I still had to look in a mirror. Somewhere in there, this painting came to me.
Or maybe I was subconsciously inspired by Mark Ryden’s Animus series. I dunno.
Anyways, “Hair” came out of all this.

Shrek is Love
On display as part of ABV Gallery’s Repost show, an art show inspired by memes. Opening tonight.
When I first saw the Shrek x Frieren x Fallen Angels Tunnel meme by Tyrone, the tender yet absurdist mix immediately struck me. I stumbled across it right after finishing Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and the pairing of the stoic Frieren with the gruff Shrek was something I never could have imagined. Later, I learned the composition was a nod to the closing scene of Wong Kar-Wai’s Fallen Angels. After that, I knew I had to make my own version.
