On Wednesday, March 11 at 8 PM, Suara Southeast Asian Choir transforms the .thedecobldg House of Explore Indonesia—a former Art Deco bank now converted into a communal marketplace—into a playground of music. As the title suggests, “Seven Songs, Seven Games” unfolds as an interactive concert experience, with each piece paired with a game. Audiences will not only listen, but clap, respond, and move with us.

The program highlights music from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, the Philippines, and Myanmar, featuring .25ken ‘s “Hela Rotan” (tug of war) from Indonesia; .chilaquil ‘s “AEIOU,” a world premiere composed especially for Suara and inspired by the “red light, green light” game played across the Malay Archipelago; ‘s “Pin Pin De Sarapin,” a Filipino finger-counting game; ‘s “Cak Anom,” a Balinese musical gameplay driven by interlocking rhythms set entirely to nonsense syllables; and ’s “Lenggang Kangkung,” a beloved folk song from the Malay-speaking world that cheekily references rooster fighting (a game we absolutely do not endorse)!

🚨SEVEN SONGS, SEVEN GAMES🚨

With that, we begin the countdown to Suara’s spring concert, “7 Songs, 7 Games: Song of SE Asian Games”!

Across SE Asia, play has always been more than just a pastime. It lives in the tug of war during “Hela Rotan” by .25ken, in the quick fingers and counting rhymes of “Pin Pin De Sarapin” by , in the lively playground chants in “AEIOU” by .chilaquil, and even in “Lenggang Kangkung” by , a cheeky nod to cockfight that we absolutely do not endorse—echoing from one generation to the next.

On 3/11, we will transform .thedecobldg—a former Art Deco bank, now reimagined as a communal marketplace—into a lively playground.

RETREAT: We had an incredible afternoon rehearsing, dancing, and eating together while we learned Balinese Kecak for our upcoming performance at St. Basil’s on November 8th!

The workshop was taught by Dewa Putu Berata, the founding director of Gamelan Cudamani, an extraordinary dance ensemble from Bali. Dewa Putu Berata also happens to be the father of Suara’s very own Dewa Ayu Larassanti!

Learning from the two of them has definitely helped us as we continue to rehearse for our fall concert in 3 weeks! We cannot wait to see you on November 8th!
