PHILIPPINEBALLET THEATER RETURNS WITHENCHANTING, VIBRANT NEW BALLET;LEGENDARYPHILIPPINE DESIGNERS TO BESHOWCASEDIN “PINAGMULAN”
(LosAngeles, CA. – September 15, 2025) - Philippine BalletTheatre, the premier ballet company from the Cultural Center of thePhilippines, bring a stunning new full-length ballet to UCLA’s Royce Hall next month. “Sarimanok”, based on themythological bird from Filipino Mindanao legend, is PBT’s newest work thattells the love story between a mortal and a moon goddess. The twenty-plus dance company, led by RoniloJaynario, PBT’s Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, tell thiscaptivating tale as a showcase of Filipino culture and talent. In Mindanao mythology, the Sarimanok symbolized hope and abundant blessings all of which are inherent in the purpose of PBT. “Last year’s “Ibalon” made a powerful impact on both the audience and the performers, receiving excellent review and accolades….our challenge is toachieve the same impact with “Sarimanok”” said Jaynario, who commissioned composer Paulo Zarate, to write original music for the ballet. With “Sarimanok” being the second full-length ballet in a row, PBT hopes to send out a strong message that their commitment to creation a national influence through art isablaze.
As with prior performances, the performance will be preceded by the wonderful“Pinagmulan” exhibit of indigenous Philippine textiles and fabrics. But with this exhibit, the extraordinary work of acclaimed Philippine fashions designerswill be displayed for audiences to see, some for the very first time beingshown outside the Philippines. Explained Executive Producer Rosie Chua, “thisyear, we are bringing the masterful works of Pitoy Moreno, Ban Farrales, RamonValera, Auero Alonzo and Christian Espiritu, some weavers and embroiderers. We want the audience, not just Filipinos, to engage with and appreciate the richhistory and culture of the Philippines through these original works.”
Joining the PBT company on stage will be acclaimed international pianist Raul Sunico,award-winning singer/songwriter Odette Quesada, singer Lyndon Apostol and theHoly Family Filipino Choir and Holy Family Children Concert Chorus. “We always want to involve Filipino artistsin our shows” said Marilou Magsaysay, President of PBT. “And because it’s already Christmas here inthe Philippines, don’t be surprised if PBT brings the merriment and celebrationof the holiday season to the Royce Hall stage!”
