AVANT GARDE SATURDAYS: While it may not be quite right to classify Andrei Tarkovsky's 1975 masterpiece MIRROR avant garde-its confidence in its dream pacing and imagery is something you almost never see in most narrative moviemaking. This shot is an example.

BEHIND THE SCENES SATURDAYS: Stanley Kubrick famously (or infamously) treated Shelley Duvall in a much more brutal way than he did Jack Nicholson on THE SHINING. Something you can see clearly in this behind the scenes clip. And yet, Duvall stated she's proud of the performance and the collaboration. MOVIE STILL OF THE WEEK: This final shot from Akira Kurosawa's 1954 SEVEN SAMURAI needs to be seen several times before the full impact can be absorbed. The four mounds/swords at top represent the fallen samurai who gave their lives for no money or glory just to do the right thing protecting farmers from bandits. Below them are the many mounds of the fallen farmers who also gave their lives. Does this signify hierarchy, gratitude, or a recognition that the living cannot fully comprehend the situation of the dead? The three remaining Samurai contemplate this in the wind and dust and the movie ends on a somber and mysterious note.
