My mother is in the fight of her life. This past September, while being hospitalized after having her second major stroke, the they discovered that my mother had breast cancer. Needless to say, this news has been devastating for our family.
After spending a month in hospital rehabilitation after her stroke, getting this diagnosis was a huge blow, both personally and financially. As a retiree living off social security, she has had just enough to cover her monthly expenses. She will need help covering her medical bills, transportation, utilities, and rent as she recovers from cancer treatment.
Selma raised me as a single mother. Growing up she would work multiple jobs to keep a roof over our head and food on the table. Even when our situation became difficult, she never asked anyone for a handout. She always believed that if she was in good health, that she could make a way for us through hard work. She sacrificed so much for me growing-up, and I'm trying my best to help her now, but this is not something I cannot do on my own.
One thing mom always did was to instill in me a sense of faith. She would tell me that despite what the circumstances looked like, that God would find a way to make things better. Over the years I've found that my higher power works through the generosity of the people in my life.
