Looking back on a thoughtful evening last February with the USC School of Cinematic Arts (USC School of Cinematic Arts) Community Impact Council exploring the role of art in today’s cultural climate.

The conversation brought together two dynamic Cuban American creators—illustrator and author
Edel Rodriguez and architect and artist Leo Marmol—in dialogue with cultural critic Carolina Miranda (Carolina A. Miranda). Together, they reflected on their families’ immigrant experiences and how political histories have shaped their creative practices.

The program included a screening of Freedom Is a Verb, the PBS American Masters short film about Rodriguez’s career as a political illustrator, a book signing for his graphic memoir Worm: A Cuban American Odyssey, and a viewing of RECURRENCE, Marmol’s exhibition exploring themes of repetition, memory, and place through the California landscape.
