My boss’s wife refused to pay my dad for fixing their pool — he looked at the water, smiled, and said, “Call me tomorrow morning.”
My dad had been repairing swimming pools for nearly thirty years.
So when my boss, Richard, asked him to fix the huge pool behind his $2 million house, Dad gave him a fair estimate.
$7,800.
The job took nine days.
New pump.
New pipes.
New filtration system.
The water went from murky green to perfectly clear.
But when Dad finished, Richard’s wife, Melissa, suddenly refused to pay.
“$7,800? For this?”
Dad showed her the estimate she had signed.
She laughed.
“My husband employs your daughter. I’d think very carefully before arguing with me.”
I was mortified.
“Dad, I’ll figure something out.”
But he didn’t look angry.
He simply stared across the pool.
Then smiled.
“Okay.”
Melissa actually smirked.
As we headed toward Dad’s truck, she called after us:
“Glad we understand each other.”
I waited until we got home.
“Dad, why didn’t you fight her?”
He opened the refrigerator, grabbed a b**r, and said:
“Because tomorrow morning, they’re going to understand why I needed both of their signatures.”
I stared at him.
“What signatures?”
Dad only smiled.
“Go to work tomorrow. You’ll see.”
At 7:46 the next morning, my phone rang.
Dad.
He was already standing in Richard’s driveway.
“Get over here.”
“Why?”
“Because your boss just discovered what was underneath his pool.”
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
Dad lowered his voice.
“And I’m not here alone.”
“Who’s with you?”
He told me.
I immediately grabbed my keys.
Twenty minutes later, I turned onto Richard’s street.
Two police cars were parked outside.
And an elderly woman I had never seen before was standing beside my father.
Richard was shouting from the driveway.
Melissa was crying.
Then the older woman noticed my car.
She walked straight toward me.
