A snug little cabin glowing in the dusk.
Thick wooden beams overhead catch the lamplight,
while a black stove pipe climbs the corner like an old friend.
Heavy curtains frame a wide window
where rain taps softly on the glass
and bare trees sway in the gray evening.
Inside, the fire crackles,
throwing gold across worn floorboards
and the deep cushions of a tired sofa.
Books lean against one another on the sill,
a small forest of quiet stories.
One lamp with a pleated shade
pours honey-colored light over an armchair
waiting for someone to sink in.
A shaggy rug drinks up the warmth,
and on its edge a black cat curls,
tail wrapped neatly, eyes half-closed in bliss.
Somewhere a kettle begins its low song.
The whole room breathes slow and easy,
as if it has all the time in the world
to keep you safe from the wind outside.
