JACCC is thrilled to welcome Kaylin Xie (L) and Samantha Shiroishi (R) to the team this summer! 🎉

Kaylin joins JACCC through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture's Arts Internship Program ( / ) as our Marketing Intern. A rising junior at USC studying Theatre and Advertising, she is passionate about creative storytelling, community outreach, and amplifying underrepresented voices through the arts.

Samantha joins JACCC as the 2026 Getty Marrow Visual Arts Intern. A fifth-generation Japanese American and student at NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study, she brings a passion for design, psychology, social justice, and community engagement.

We're excited to have them on board and look forward to all they'll contribute this summer 🤗

The Little Tokyo Breakfast Club begins its second year with its next guest speaker: Karen Umemoto, Ph.D. 🍳

Join us for the Little Tokyo Breakfast Club, a monthly community tradition held on the third Thursday of every month. Enjoy casual conversation, shared stories, and a home-cooked Japanese breakfast while taking in the seasonal beauty of the James Irvine Japanese Garden.

Hosts Steve Nagano and Jane Matsumoto welcome Karen Umemoto, Ph.D., professor and Director of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, as the featured guest speaker and the first speaker of the Breakfast Club's second year. Throughout her career, she has focused on community development, juvenile justice reform, and advancing the inclusion of Asian American and Pacific Islander histories in K-12 education. She is currently researching the history of community development in Little Tokyo and is co-director and co-editor of the forthcoming online collection, Foundations and Futures: Asian American and Pacific Islander Multimedia Textbook.

Celebrate the creativity of the next generation with «Identity ― わたしは、誰？», the fourth installment of JACCC’s annual summer student anime exhibition, featuring 30 vibrant works by young artists from Wakayama Prefectural High School, Wakayama University, and anime clubs across Wakayama Prefecture, Japan 🎨✨

Inspired by this year’s theme, students explore culture, growth, belonging, and self-discovery through art, storytelling, and design. Together, these works invite viewers to reflect on the experiences and connections that shape who we are.

𝘓𝘐𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘕𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘗𝘈𝘙𝘛𝘠: July 10th, we’re venturing into the ‘00s with a listening session at the Japanese garden dedicated to atmospheric instrumental beat music pioneered by artists like Nujabes and Force of Nature.

World of Japanese Hip-Hop and Breakbeats explores the seminal hip-hop, jazz, soul-infused sounds that defined and influenced generations of producers. During this session, we’ll play through all of Seba Jun aka Nujabes’ classic albums including Metaphorical Music, Moda Soul, and Spiritual State along music by Force of Nature, and the classic Samurai Shamploo soundtrack that both artists worked on. Signature ramen from Kyoto’s Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognized Ramenya Fujitora will also be available alongside a curated selection of Japanese whiskey, beer, and wine by JACCC.

The Little Tokyo Breakfast Club is turning one! 🍳 🎉

To mark the one-year anniversary of the series, hosts Steve Nagano and Jane Matsumoto welcome back all twelve of the program’s guest speakers for a special conversation reflecting on their journeys, the impact of Little Tokyo on their lives, and the ways they have helped shape the community.

Experience the art of shodō (Japanese calligraphy) through «KOYOMI Installation», a new exhibition created by Kuniharu Yoshida (), Kohei Matsuno (), Mimi Wada (), and students from our Shodō for Little Tokyo Class of 2026 🖌️✨

Inspired by koyomi (the traditional Japanese calendar), this exhibition explores memory, identity, and the cultural life of Little Tokyo through contemporary calligraphy, community storytelling, and shared artistic practice.

Happy closing to the phenomenal company of artists that brought ’s FLOWER DRUM SONG to life after 25 years since its last revival in LA. Thank you to the families, friends, and new fans that came to experience a show like no other, by AAPI artists for the AAPI community. Our little Club Chop Suey in Little Tokyo served historic Chinatown glamour night after night. Sharing some final praise from LA critics before last call brings the curtain down.

𝘓𝘐𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘕𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘗𝘈𝘙𝘛𝘠: For our third listening session of the year, we’re bringing back one of our favorite ongoing themes: Film & Animation Soundtracks! Join us June 5th for a session in the garden dedicated to the beloved soundtracks of Studio Ghibli’s master composer Joe Hisaishi.

The decades-long partnership between Joe Hisaishi and the Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki began in 1984 with Nausicaä Valley of the Wind. It is one of the great director composer collaborations (like Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone or Steven Spielberg and John Williams.) Hisaishi’s minimalist yet heartfelt compositions perfectly complement Ghibli’s tender, universally appealing films.
