A group exhibition that makes connections between the work of artists sharing the common origin point of the California State University - Long Beach Drawing & Painting program (Bachelor of Fine Arts or Master of Fine Arts degrees). Collectively, the exhibition creates a sense of storytelling through their use of figure, location, or other compelling visual factors. Works have a basis in reality, but push beyond into the unexpected exploring ideas of identity, sense of self, belonging, mood, figuration, and surrealism.

Crossings invites viewers to explore the collective narrative of artists navigating their American identities while honoring their ancestral roots. Centered primarily on Los Angeles-based artists of Latin American descent, the group exhibition also includes voices from AAPI, Middle Eastern and other immigrant communities.

The exhibition reflects on the layered experiences of artists whose works are deeply informed by the environments they or their ancestors inhabit or were raised in. Crossings offers a poignant meditation on the evolving dynamics of cultural preservation, adaptation, and belonging across time and place.

More than just flora, they serve as symbols of identity, markers of where I come from, and reminders of the home I long for. Their presence in the composition reflects a connection to a distant place—one that remains alive through memory and longing.

What the Window Holds

What the Window Holds is a quiet collection of memories gathered on a single window ledge. A trompo and slingshot recall childhood in Guatemala, while a box of crayons and a helicopter drawing trace back to my first art project in elementary school with Mr. Beg. Elmo, a joint, and scattered roaches drift in from other paintings, linking past works like echoes.

My faint reflection in the glass makes this an indirect self-portrait, blurring past and present. This same window reappears in That Day on the Bus, now seen from the outside, Elmo still resting in place. As I painted, long-buried memories surfaced, shaping not just this piece but the larger narrative my work continues to explore—turning a simple window into a passage through time.

Where I Left My Marbles is a close-up of a childhood game I used to play in Guatemala—digging holes in the dirt, setting up a course, and gambling marbles with friends after school. It was more than just a game; it was a daily ritual, a small but meaningful piece of home. The marbles in this painting hold onto that memory, a reminder of a place that feels both far away and ever-present. This moment isn’t just captured here—it weaves through other paintings like Mijo, It’s Time and Lingering in Yesterday’s Light, showing how certain memories keep finding their way back, shaping the way I remember and reconnect with the past.

The Fragility of Courage /

The Fragility of Courage explores the delicate nature of courage, as the title suggests. In this painting, I wear the Zorro costume once again, hiding behind the identity of a strong fictional figure to navigate my world. I hold a piece of Tupperware with a fully developed cicada inside, its lid half-open, not fully sealed. This moment captures a tension: am I keeping the cicada contained, or am I letting it free to face the world, now that it’s ready for its next stage? This ambiguity mirrors the complexity of my own identity—caught between holding on and letting go, between freedom and confinement, much like my experience navigating displacement. In the background, a scene of Oratorio, my hometown, further anchors the emotional weight of this moment, blending memory with the struggle of moving forward.

Lingering in Yesterday’s Light captures a moment of remembrance and longing. I sit atop a Tonka truck, just as I did in my childhood in Guatemala, holding a bright red-striped ball—another object tied to memories of home. My gaze is fixed on a distant view of Guatemala, a home that remains out of reach, a feeling reinforced by the chain-link fence that stands as a physical and symbolic barrier. The viewer’s perspective is placed low to the ground, looking up at the scene, heightening the emotional weight of this monumental moment. Scattered in the dirt are marbles and small holes, reminiscent of a childhood game I used to play—echoing the landscape of Mijo, It’s Time, where the same game appears. Could this be the same place? The connection between these paintings deepens the sense of nostalgia, weaving together memory, place, and time.
