We are proud to introduce Rafael González as Grand Performances’ new Interim President and CEO.

Rafael @civicrafa was born and raised in Los Angeles and has a long history of executive leadership and community advocacy in the nonprofit, government, and philanthropic fields.

“As an Angeleno and product of the arts and social context of Los Angeles, I am thrilled to join the amazing team at Grand Performances,” says Rafael. “Celebrating its 36th year, Grand Performances continues to bring free access to the performing arts throughout the Los Angeles region. I came of age with Grand Performances and know personally the critical role we play in inspiring community, celebrating diversity and uniting Los Angeles through dance, poetry, theater, music and art. Moving forward, I honor our past and look to our future by connecting our long-time supporters to a new generation of fans, neighbors and partners through our beloved concert series and much more.”

Rafael previously served as Director of Community Relations for both First 5 LA and the Los Angeles Dodgers; as well as Chief Service Officer for City of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. He serves on the boards of the Community Coalition, Center for Nonprofit Management and ActiveSGV. He graduated from Cal State University at Northridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chicano Studies and received his Master’s Degree from the USC Price School of Public Policy.

We invite you to join us on June 4 at 6pm at California Plaza for GP’s first event of the summer, where we will introduce Rafael to the community and bid farewell to our retiring President and CEO Mari Riddle.

This #TBT is dedicated to 2019's Audacity of Sound presented by Grand Performances.

L.A.'s own @la_marisoul (of @lasantacecilia fame) served up renditions of classic songs layered with jazz, rumba, rock, soul, cumbia and other western and Pan-Latin music styles. Her performance brought inspiration and reminded women how important their voice is even in politically unsettling times.

La Marisoul was born Eva Marisol Hernandez in DTLA (downtown LA), the diverse and vibrant heart of Los Angeles. Growing up part-time in Mexico and the United States created the duality of American pop culture and the roots of traditional folkloric music, which helped shaped her musical sensibility.

“That’s the root of what I sing—traditional boleros and rancheras I learned from the musicians that played at restaurants on Olvera Street. They taught me how to sing loud and pass the basket around.”

Inspired by life, love, heartbreak and the drunken rants of the neighborhood, La Marisoul began writing songs incorporating those anecdotes with her own personal experiences, fears, dreams and desires. The songs explore humanity and society, utilizing lyrics that encourage us to get off the hamster wheel to which we are conditioned, while others inspire to spread our wings and find our own destiny. La Marisoul’s lyrics stem from observations, aspirations as well as, the agony and pleasures of love.

Congrats to The Do-Over family for 15yrs of positive vibrations across the planet! Here are a few highlights of yesterday’s anniversary at Grand Performances (Sorry for yelling)😬🤷‍♂️🤣 Side note: Right before I got on stage, I told Jamie that I was going to start with an unearthed Bollywood soundtrack from 1984 and he gave me a big smile and said “Do you Will, that’s why we love you” and voilà we were off on an international psychedelic bass beats and hiphop video game trip! Love and respect to all of the thousands of Angelenos who came out and rocked with us and to all of the performers who blessed the stage I salute you! Thanks to Hit+Run crew run for the bad ass tee’s too! ❤️
