Geffen Playhouse has been a hub of the Los Angeles theater scene since opening its doors in 1995. Named in honor of entertainment mogul and philan

thropist David Geffen, who made the initial donation to the theater, the company was founded by Gilbert Cates and is currently helmed by Executive Director/CEO Gil Cates, Jr., Artistic Director Tarell Alvin McCraney and Board Chair Adi Greenberg. We are deeply saddened by the passing of costume and scenic designer Sara Ryung Clement, whose artistry, imagination, and generosity of spirit left an indelible mark on the Geffen Playhouse community.

Sara's extraordinary talent graced four productions on our stages: "The Reservoir," "The Inheritance," "The Thanksgiving Play," and "The Model Apartment." Through her thoughtful and evocative designs, she helped bring stories to life, creating worlds that enriched the work of countless artists and resonated with audiences long after the curtain fell.

Beyond her remarkable creative gifts, Sara was a beloved collaborator whose warmth, kindness, and passion for storytelling touched everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sara's partner Greg, her family, friends, and the many theatermakers whose lives she impacted. Her legacy will live on through the beauty she created and the memories she leaves behind.
