Seventy-three years ago today...
It was a Tuesday; the sky was clear and the temperature in the mid-80s, but Edie took a red umbrella to Penn Station just in case. She arrived on the afternoon train at East Hampton and Gould and her mother drove her home. Umbrella and luggage still in hand, they took a few photographs on the front porch in the afternoon sun, Spot II joining in. The sun behind her, Big Edie's shadow looms over her sad and tired daughter. She was home.
Gould left for Paris soon thereafter.
"Mother started calling me up in March and she said you have to come home. Said I can't live here alone, I can't get along, said you have to come home. She called me for three months. She started in March. I held out April, May and June and the end of July I checked out of the Barbizon and came home. I had to obey her." - Edie Beale, 1988.
