(After years of rebuilding after a teenage felony conviction and time on Rikers Island, Afrika Owes, a mom from New York City, passed the bar exam on her first try.

The Fordham Law graduate shared her reaction in a TikTok that drew nearly three million views. She grew up watching her late mother, Karen, advocate for people in Harlem. “I’ve always dreamed of going to law school,” Owes said, noting the importance of knowing the law whether or not you become a lawyer.

Now a single mother, she plans to practice tax law and pursue a judicial clerkship. Her path shows why you should never give up on yourself.)
