“No other label embodied this conscious rebel spirit better than Rap-A-Lot Records. Born In 1986, Prince formed Rap-A-Lot Records as a way to keep his brother, Sir Rap-A-Lot, off the streets, and to service the overlooked Houston rap scene. Despite an immense amount of talent, the third coast was ignored by executives and exploited by east coast DJs. Throughout its 30 year history, Rap-A-Lot became one of the most successful independent hip-hop labels, beginning with the prosperity of the Geto Boys and the promotion of Pimp C, Bun B, Z-Ro, Trae tha Truth, Lil Keke, Slim Thug, Lil Flip and more.
More recently, he stepped in to settle a vicious lyrical spat between Drake and Pusha T as well as Drake and Kanye West. The personal digs in each’s songs reminded Prince of how quickly a rap beef can escalate. In 1997, just weeks before the Notorious B.I.G.’s untimely passing, Prince urged the Ready to Die rapper and his manager Puff Daddy to leave Los Angeles to protect Biggie’s safety. For Prince, no hip-hop battle is worth a life, especially one he and his son have a financial stake in. Confronting music executives and dissolving disputes only adds to his reputation for being a resilient, and sometimes feared, industry veteran.”

“The music game is a game that will run the weak off,” he said. “I went into this business with a made up mind, meaning not making it wasn’t even an option.”

Revenue Russ 🛄

Russ has been a strong supporter of the independent scene for some time now. He has always been vocal about labels having their hands all over an artist and their work. In June, Russ announced he completed all the obligations he had to Columbia Records and left them in favor of trying his hand in the independent market. It’s not easy diving into the indie scene, but according to Russ, it might have been the best financial move he could’ve made for himself.

“On June 30, 2020, Russ announced that he completed his deal with Columbia Records and is now an independent artist. On November 17, 2020, he released an EP titled Chomp. It features guest appearances from Black Thought, Busta Rhymes, Benny the Butcher and Ab-Soul, among others.”

On Monday (November 9), Russ took to his Twitter to reveal how much money he’s bringing in with his weekly checks after going independent. In the tweet, Russ writes, “Some weekly checks on tunecore..inspo purposes only artists : own your music and stop letting these labels take 15% distribution fees for pressing an upload button.”

Russ has been having quite the year despite COVID-19 slowing things down for everyone. On top of earning hefty checks and cracking the top ten with his fourteenth studio album, Russ is getting wins on the courts too.

Airmiess “Nipsey Hustle” Asghedom Is/Was The Embodiment Of Leverage 🛅
We Only Hope To Continue The Race For The Prolific Artist & Entrepreneur.

“Nipsey Hussle was truly expanding his vision before his untimely death in 2019. In 2010, after surviving two rocky record deals, the entrepreneurial Los Angeles rapper founded a label of his own, All Money In. The enterprise was the home for his memorable 2013 album Crenshaw, which Nipsey successfully sold 1,000 copies of for $100 each. That innovative and self-driven approach gained him respect and support as an artist-CEO. Since then, he’s been steadfast in his plan to craft an empire on his own terms, through endeavors like his community-inspired Marathon Clothing brand. On Monday, Nipsey announced that after building leverage as an independent artist for most of his career, he then ventured to partner his All Money In imprint with Atlantic Records to propel his critically acclaimed album, Victory Lap.”

Let Armos Boost Your Book of Business. Don’t Fall For The Traps of Artist of The Past. 🛗

“The devil doesn't come to you with a red face and horns, he comes to you disguised as everything you've ever wanted.”
― Oscar Auliq-Ice

“The 360 deal is not new.  The first reported one was English recording star Robbie Williams’ deal with EMI in 2002.  But in the last few years 360 deals have become common place.  New artists signing with a major label or their affiliates can expect it as a matter of course.  The reason for the prevalence of the 360 deal is the dramatic decline in income from sales of recorded music.
Income from sales of pre-recorded music reached its peak in 1999 at approximately 14.5 billion dollars.  By 2012 that amount had shrunk to only approximately $7 billion —  a decline of more than 50% not accounting for inflation.

Under the traditional paradigm, the label would pay the artist a small royalty which was even smaller after all the deductions.  The artist could expect to receive no recording royalty at all unless his album was a major commercial success.  But he got to keep everything else: publishing, merch, touring, endorsements, etc.

As I mentioned earlier, 360 deals generally suck for artists.  But it may be worth accepting – but only if properly negotiated and only if the major pitfalls touched on in this article are avoided.  Obviously the artist should never enter into any exclusive recording contract, let alone a 360 deal, without the assistance of capable counsel.”
