Nia Long and Will Smith share a celebrated history in American television, most notably collaborating on the hit 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air where Long played Lisa Wilkes, the girlfriend and eventual fiancée to Smith's character. Before securing this major recurring role in the show's fifth season, Long made an early appearance in season two as a completely different character named Claudia. Cicely Tyson and Maya Angelou were two towering icons of American culture, civil rights, and Black excellence whose artistic collaboration transformed into a profound, lifelong friendship. They first met in 1960 while co-starring in the landmark Off-Broadway production of Jean Genet’s The Blacks, a pivotal moment that helped shape modern Black theater. Tyson, an Academy Award-nominated actress and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, dedicated her seven-decade career to portraying resilient, dignified Black women while intentionally rejecting demeaning Hollywood stereotypes. Angelou, a globally revered poet, memoirist, and activist, authored the masterpiece I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and broke boundaries across literature, film, and civil rights. Over the decades, their parallel missions of breaking racial barriers and advocating for marginalized communities kept them deeply connected. They periodically reunited onscreen, most notably in the 1977 groundbreaking television miniseries Roots and Tyler Perry's 2006 film Madea's Family Reunion. When Angelou passed away in 2014, Tyson delivered a moving tribute at her memorial service, describing their relationship as an unbreakable, eternal bond.

Carmen de Lavallade and Geoffrey Holder were an iconic husband-and-wife creative duo who served as a widely influential force in American modern dance and theater for nearly six decades. The couple met in New York City during the 1954 Broadway run of Truman Capote's House of Flowers and married just months later in 1955, initiating a lifelong partnership where Holder frequently celebrated de Lavallade as his ultimate artistic muse. Known for her incomparable beauty and grace, de Lavallade rose to fame alongside her childhood friend Alvin Ailey, later performing with the American Ballet Theatre and breaking racial barriers as one of the first Black principal dancers and choreographers at the Metropolitan Opera. Holder was a towering Trinidadian-born polymath whose larger-than-life personality contrasted with his wife's serene composure; he achieved massive success as a dancer, actor, prolific painter, and director, becoming the first Black artist to win Tony Awards for both direction and costume design for the Broadway musical The Wiz. Together, they fiercely broke through racial barriers in the performing arts and championed West Indian and Black dance traditions, a rich collective legacy beautifully captured in the acclaimed 2005 documentary Carmen & Geoffrey.
