Young people, elders, families togetherβ€”smiling, united, proud. Some holding tribal flags or symbols. Energy is celebratory and powerful. Sign reads: 'INDIGENOUS PRIDE. INDIGENOUS POWER. Arizona State University's commencement ceremony featured a keynote speech by Harrison Ford, who advocated for cultural change, social justice, and greater respect for Indigenous peoples. As an actor and conservationist, Ford is known globally for his iconic roles in Indiana Jones and Star Wars. He addressed more than 14,000 undergraduate students from ASU's Class of 2026 and received an honorary Doctor of Arts and Humane Letters degree. Ford stressed the importance of recognizing the value of Indigenous peoples, saying, 'We need to respect and elevate the Indigenous peoples that are being marginalized.' With his extensive experience on Conservation International's Board of Directors, Ford encouraged graduates to find purpose and leadership, highlighting that Indigenous communities view trees, mountains, water, and soil as relatives, not commodities. Following the speech, Stephen Roe Lewis, Governor of the Gila River Indian Community and ASU alum, thanked Ford for his advocacy, acknowledging the importance of his message.
