✨DID YOU KNOW?✨
Water plays many important roles for Songkran. It symbolizes:
🔹Purification and cleansing, where it washes away bad luck and sins from the past year.
🔹Blessings and respect especially towards elders. It can also honor wisdom, kindness and gratitude.
🔹Renewal and new beginnings, starting the new year with a clean heart and mind.
🔹Bringing a sense of belonging and connection, strengthening bonds within families and communities.

I love that I get to observe the new year three times. It is such a unique experience to be able to honor holidays across the Gregorian, Lunar and Solar calendars. I want to acknowledge that this holiday is celebrated across multiple cultures and countries in South and Southeast Asia as well such as Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and parts of India.

Lunar New Year 2025: Year of the Snake featuring snake fruit 🐍

Bangkok’s Chinatown is called (เยาวราช), which means “young king” to honor the first crown prince of Thailand.

Chinese people first moved to Thailand to seek for better opportunities and started living by the Chao Phraya River. Due to its prime location, it was perfect for traders from China and other places to trade goods. In the late 17th century, Chinese immigrants were requested to move outside the city wall when King Rama I established the Grand Palace. Yaowarat then became the result of resettlement. To this day, it continues to be busy ALL day and night everyday. Very popular area for cheap items, Thai Chinese temples, gold/jewelry and street food!

Some notable Thai things I experienced:
🔹Though the most touristy thing I did all trip, finally wearing traditional thai clothing.
🔹Instead of visiting Wat Pho to primarily see architecture, I went to see my หลวงลุง and หลวงปู่.
🔹Seeing the details of traditional thai designs with hopes to study the art.
🔹Learning about my uncle’s experiences of him serving in the Navy. My dad’s family was formerly in the Navy and love staying by the ocean.
🔹Beer with ice… or is it beer on the rocks?

It’s been 8 years since I last visited Thailand, this trip being my fourth. The concept of family has been a bit difficult for me to define. Growing up, it was just my parents and I. I learned about family members while looking through photo albums my parents brought from Thailand when they first moved here. I know my family, but I also don’t know them as much. Yet I have so much love for them and wished I had more opportunities to visit. Of all my grandparents, I’ve only met my two grandmothers. With one remaining and realizing that she has hit her 80s, I am grateful for the memories we made but also feeling the weight of the years that separate us.

Sometimes I know enough to get around and fit in, sometimes I don’t. I still have to think hard to formulate some sentences, but I also care so much about traditional thai arts. I hope to immerse myself more with thai architectural and pattern design, music and dance next time.

My visits are gradually shifting my mentality from tourist to local. I see Thailand in a different light now, a lot of which I finally have places to call home in Chonburi and Nakhon Nayok. But food poisoning and mosquito bites still remain the same 🥹

There’s so much more I can touch upon about my own journey with Thainess. What about yours?

🔸ขอบคุณค่ะ/ครับ (khob khun ka/krub): used to thank someone older, has higher social status, a stranger in the general public, to someone in formal or semi-formal manners, or when not sure about someone’s social status.
🔸ขอบใจนะ (khob jai na): used to thank someone younger than you, close friends, or someone in an informal manner.
🔸ขอบพระคุณ (khob phra khun): used to thank someone
formally and respectfully, often used in religious contexts, when addressing elders, or in very polite situations.
