It’s the first Knit Night of June, and Election Day here in California, so I’ve got two good reasons to bring out the wine and cheese tonight from 6-8 pm.

If you haven’t already voted in person, or mailed your ballot, you can still drop it in an official ballot box. Democracy only works when we all participate!

And Knit Night is a fun place to get your tedious finishing done, like finally adding buttons to the cardigan I finished last month. I’ll save a seat for you…

The act of making for someone else is a gift that can’t be measured. With every stitch, your good intentions, love and care become part of the fabric of your project. It’s especially true when it comes to babies - I recently knit a baby sweater for a shop sample and I couldn’t help thinking back to when my own kids were little. Such sweet times - even if they’re a little hazy from sleep deprivation!

Are you celebrating a new arrival soon? Appalachian Baby has the most adorable kits for sweaters, blankets, bibs and more to celebrate the little ones in your life. All made with US-grown organic cotton, so you know it will be easy-care and soft next to baby’s skin.

Shop our collection on Appalachian Baby kits in-store and online.

You know the feeling when you discover a gem - something that seems basic, but in fact outshines your expectations?

ITO Shimo is one of those gems. It's not flashy on the shelf, but it is a yarn that customers come back into the shop raving about. They love the softness, the drape and the stitch definition - everything you need for a spectacular summer-to-fall top or shawl. We just received more colors this week, from refreshing pastels to brights and elegant neutrals in between. The slightly tweedy blend of wool and silk in fi*****ng weight makes it an especially lovely yarn for those of us in the Bay Area.

Some of my favorite patterns for Shimo:
- Ilha by Orlane Sucche
- Cloudesley by Isabell Kraemer
- Lille Kolding by Chris Berlin
- Color Poem by Cecelia Campochiaro
- Ease Tee by Anne Ventzel

WIP Wednesday: In Threes by Kelly Herdrich, knit in Isager Baby, also called Eco Baby.

Baby projects are so much more than a sweater, booties or a blanket. Every stitch is made with love and good intentions, and the yarn you choose has to be just right: easy-care and soft next to baby skin.

Eco Baby is a squishy blend of alpaca and cotton that can handle gentle washing. Since it’s a finer weight than the pattern calls for, I knit the next size up with a needle size appropriate for the yarn (US 4-5). I’ve knit this pattern a few times and I love how quickly it works up and there are no teeny sleeves to knit in the round. Easier for you, and easier to get squirmy baby arms into the cardigan.

Isager Baby comes in soft undyed colors as well as pastels - it’s worthy of your next tiny project!

Finishing touches… a perfectly charming button and a garment tag make your handmade items truly special. It’s the icing on the cake, the cherry on top of the sundae, the cocoa on your cappuccino. Find your personal flair in our new arrivals from Sarah Hearts, in-store and online.

It's going to be good! Don't miss the next Fiberside Chat with Norah Gaughan this Sunday, May 31 at 10 am PT.

Explore the original thought processes behind Knitting Nature, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, with Norah Gaughan. Norah’s love of biology shines through in these patterns—a creative exploration of science made beautifully knittable.

This year will see the release of 6 of the book's patterns updated to 2026 standards and norms, expanding the size range, flipping the construction to be top down and adding new variations for necklines and body lengths. Enjoy a preview of the new photography and dive deep into the knitting details with some helpful tutorials.

Norah will also delve into the possible customizations to some of the other 30+ patterns in her beloved first book, offering fresh inspiration for knitters of all experience levels.

You know the feeling when you've seen something beautiful, as well as functional, but you passed it up because it felt too extravagant? I've learned that if I'll use it often, or it will bring me joy every time, it's well worth the cost.

Every maker should have at least one Re: Designed Project bag. The exquisite craftsmanship and thoughtful details are worthy of your precious works-in-progress, and a reminder that what you make with your hands is special.

Our Memorial Day Sale continues until midnight tonight, so it's the perfect time to add a Re:Designed bag to your collection. The shop is closed today but you can browse our selection online. https://uncommonthreadsyarn.com/collections/bags-cases

WIP WEDNESDAY: Tropez by Susanne Müller, worked in Isager Trio 2!

I love how crochet gives you so many options for openwork stitches. Granny stitch is one of the most basic, and it's a mindless pattern that you can work while you're relaxing - or supposed to paying attention to something else 😉

Isager Trio 2 is a lovely blend of cotton, linen and lyocell for a crisp yet drapey crocheted fabric. Nice and cool for the hot weather ahead...
