James Ong’s feature show,

“Beyond Blue Yonder” 

A collection of abstract paintings

Like a lost explorer, James Ong ventures into the great unknown without a map, with only his intuition and experience to guide him. What he seeks is to create thought-provoking, memorable experiences through his art and design. 

Painting is James’s meditation. His paintings depict imaginary places, things, or memories. He is drawn towards Eastern thinking and aesthetics, especially Zen Buddhism and Japanese art and design where his imagination can wander and play without constraint. 

As an ex-Engineer, James attended art school focusing on toy design. He is a self-taught painter, learning through books, videos, and experimentation. 

When not making art, James likes to read and think deep thoughts about art, design, and life.

Here is an update on my casting workshop - the tree of wild iris, poppy and other botanicals that you saw last issue went through the kiln and I shot molten metal into the voids left by the flowers and wax that burnt out. The second photo shows the results - interesting but not fabulous.  I managed to capture the intricate texture of the top wild iris but there were several spots where the metal didn’t flow smoothly and left pits or gaps.  The four petal shrub flower on the side seems to have come out fully, but the poppy only half filled.  About par for the course in this process - casting organics is very finicky and takes a huge amount of patience (and many many attempts!)

I had SO much fun visiting with folks at SVOS in May!  We had about 500 visitors at my Iris House site ( #55 with 12 artists) and over a hundred of them tried on my creations to enter the “Try for a Try Raffle” for a $100 gift certificate.  It was wonderful to see my artwork on a wide range of gorgeous women.  It’s great to see the eyes light up and smiles spread across the face when a person finds a piece that brings them joy.
