đď¸Tonight, join us for an important installation of Throwback Movie Night @ Tippitiwichit. Weâll be presenting 1928âs masterpiece âTHE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARCâ on our 98 inch screen! If youâve never seen it, do yourself a favor and come see RenĂŠe Jeanne Falconettiâs life changing performance for yourself.
When the Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer was recruited by the SociĂŠtĂŠ GĂŠnĂŠrale of France to direct a film based around a prolific French figure from history, Joan of Arc became the subject of his next film. Despite doing over a year of research on Joan, French Nationalists opposed his taking on the project as a Danish filmmaker, voicing concerns that he would not do the story of Joan of Arc justice. Ultimately the film was made with only minor cuts forced by the French government. However, as recently as 1981, Dryerâs unaltered original print of the film was discovered sealed in a mental hospital in Norway.
The making of the film was very unconventional for the time. Dreyer cast Falconetti as Joan after seeing her perform on stage in a comedy. She had only one film role to her name, and this would be her second and last. Her performance is one of the greatest single performances in the history of film. The emotions she communicates even in an era without dialogue is astounding. Combined with close-up angles and focus on the actorsâ faces sans makeup, the film cultivates a deeply emotional and almost surreal atmosphere. Bask in the greatness, 6pm Tonight @ Tippitiwichit!
