A very special Turntable Tuesday is coming up.

We’re thrilled to welcome Annie Zaleski to Speak of the Devil — Cleveland-based music journalist, New York Times bestselling author, and someone who has spent a very large portion of her life thinking, writing and talking about the music the rest of us have spent our lives listening to.

Annie’s work has appeared in Rolling Stone, NPR Music, The Guardian, Time and the Los Angeles Times. She’s written books on Duran Duran, Lady Gaga, P!nk, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Cher, Beyoncé and more, along with liner notes for R.E.M. and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction essays for Duran Duran and George Michael.

So yeah. She knows a few things about records.

This Tuesday, though, Annie won’t be behind the turntable. She’ll be hanging out with us and talking about her books — particularly her recent "Stevie Nicks in 50 Songs", a trip through the songs, stories, collaborations and wonderfully strange orbit of one of rock & roll’s most enduring figures.

And we’ll get a little look ahead at what Annie has coming next: a new book about Dolly Parton.

Which feels pretty perfect for Turntable Tuesday, really.

Because this night has never just been about putting records on.

I was just too darn slow to get a photo of the mountain of boxes that arrived with fall goods yesterday... because Erik was so expeditious at getting everything unboxed. All these gorgeous goods and lots more will be out, looking sharp, and ready for you to shop ASAP! Thank you to everyone who came in and took advantage of our August sale—you cleaned this place out and made room for this new season (and all these boxes arriving daily). We're here 10-6 today! P.S. Don't let Erik do computer work all day... come in and shop so he can take a break from the tech we all know he LOVES so much 🖥🤣

Mai Tai Week starts next Wednesday, August 26 at Speak of the Devil.

Which means, among other things, it’s time for our 3rd Annual Mai Tai Week glass drop.

And man, we dig this one.

Another killer design from our friend Pete Klockau of the Black Lagoon Room and, just for a little extra ridiculousness, this sucker glows in the dark. Because...of course!

Glasses drop Wednesday. $16 per glass, $25 for a glass filled with one of our Mai Tai's! Our annual Mai Tai menu will be flowing. You know how this works.

Now, say you wanted to get a little jump on this year’s Mai Tai menu AND get your hands on the glass before Mai Tai Week officially gets rolling at our little corner of Lorain…

Next Tuesday, August 25, while Wyatt and Lilly tend to your Tuesday Night Cocktail Club $8 All Night Happy Hour needs here at Speak, Kurt & Jack are wandering over to Cuyahoga Falls and getting behind the bar with our friends at Tiki Underground for a little Speak of the Devil Mai Tai Week preview pop-up.

HISTORY POST: When the locals ask where did the name of our space come from? Well here is a bit of historical information on Burdette's.

Burdette S. Smith (born June 6, 1876, in Ludington, Michigan) was a self-made businessman in Lorain, Ohio, known in the early 20th century as the head of an electrical contracting firm and automobile garage/dealership.

His early life was marked by hardship. His father, Samuel Smith, worked as a foreman in Northern Michigan lumber camps during the industry’s peak. After his mother Loretta’s death, the family home broke up. With only limited public-school education, young Burdette went to New York City, where he sold newspapers on the streets before finding work with a telephone company. He advanced from operator to switchboard and cable work, eventually becoming a foreman. This experience gave him practical expertise in electrical construction and operations that shaped his career.

In 1900 he moved to Lorain to take charge of the telephone department at the National Tube Company (a major local steel-related employer). He later organized the Lorain Electrical Construction Company, serving as manager, secretary, and treasurer. In September 1914 he acquired controlling interest and renamed it the Lorain Electric & Auto Company. By 1916 it was described as a substantial local business. Smith built a two-story brick plant (33 by 143 feet) for shops and garage use, plus a separate two-story warehouse (25 by 50 feet). In addition to electrical contracting and general repair work, the firm held the local agency for Ford and Buick automobiles.

We’re excited to welcome Joe Hall back to Speak of the Devil for another night of his one-man, high-energy show.

Joe’s solo set is a 100% live performance, building songs in real time by looping and layering guitar, vocals, and rhythm into mashups that keep the room moving. It’s a creative, spontaneous style where familiar songs take on new life as they stack and evolve right in front of you.

Expect a heavy dose of ’90s rock and alternative, mixed with top hits, a few classics, and some modern favorites thrown in for good measure.
