These little creatures could easily be seen as a nuisance for eating my carrot leaves, but I counted 15 of them today and don’t mind sharing.

Black swallowtail caterpillars know exactly what they want. Even surrounded by other plants, they stick to members of the carrot family. Luckily, it is almost time to pick the carrots anyway, and I absolutely love seeing butterflies around the property.

They can have the leaves. I’ll take the carrots and the butterflies. 🥕🐛🦋

My wife loves praying mantises. While I was taking pictures of this one, she casually reminded me that females sometimes kill and eat the males after mating — head included.

About 30 seconds later, it flew directly onto my head.

That’s also how I learned mantises can fly.

I ran. I screamed. I knocked it off.

A few minutes later, we found it sitting on a flower holding a piece of my hair.

I assume as a warning.

Every day is an adventure and a new encounter with wildlife on the land.

Sometimes it’s a cute baby animal. Other times it’s a copperhead crawling across your driveway. 🐍

A couple things I learned about copperheads that I had no idea about:

🥒 When threatened, they can release a defensive musk that some people describe as smelling like fresh cucumbers.

🌳 They’re mostly ground-dwellers, but copperheads can climb into low trees and shrubs — including to hunt cicadas and caterpillars.

🌡️ Like other pit vipers, they have heat-sensing pits between their eyes and nostrils that help them detect warm-blooded prey.

And one of my favorites: baby copperheads have bright yellow or greenish-yellow tail tips that they wiggle like a worm to lure frogs and lizards close enough to strike.

Never a dull day out here. Sometimes you just have to watch where you step. 😂

Found a forbidden gummy worm roaming the property today. 🌈🐛

Apparently it’s one of the prominent moths (Notodontidae) in its prepupal colors, wandering off to find a spot to bury itself and pupate.

Nature is weird as hell. I love it.

This old girl has been overheating, leaking oil, fighting 100-degree Missouri heat and eating enough weeds and seeds to start her own ecosystem.

Still fires up and heads back into the woods every morning.

I respect the hell out of that kind of stubbornness. 😂

The sunflower buffet is officially open. 🌻🐦

We planted these for the pollinators, but the goldfinches have been patiently waiting for their turn. Now that the heads are heavy with seed, they’re making the most of it.

One of my favorite parts of managing this land is watching something we planted turn into habitat and food for wildlife. Plant it, let it grow, and let nature take it from there.

🌻 Grown for the birds, bees, and everything in between.

One of my favorite photos from a recent float down the Current River.

What do you notice?

Nature is everywhere if you slow down enough to look. Life finds a way into every crack, crevice, and little pocket where it can thrive.

Niches are awesome. Find yours. 🌿

Nature’s camouflage is almost unbelievable.

This giant walkingstick was hanging around the house, looking more like a loose twig than one of North America’s longest insects. Despite its size, it’s completely harmless—just a gentle, nighttime leaf eater trying its best not to be noticed.

There’s always something wild to discover when you slow down and look around the forest.

Some mornings the forest gives you a pretty good reason to stop what you’re doing and look up. 🌈🌲

A little color over the treetops after the rain. One of my favorite parts of living, working, and creating out here is that no two days ever look quite the same.
