It's the first day of the 2026-27 academic year! And we're still catching up with our theatre students and how they spent their summers.

Cassie Fauble returned to work with her family and good friends in the KidsQuest program at her home church, which is where she interned in high school. She got to do lots of goofy and wonderful things onstage and behind-the-scenes for them.

Cassie also ran a theatre workshop at her old homeschool co-op, where they created a 3-minute production with set, lights, sound, and costumes in 2.5 hours. Then she got to take her first mission trip, to Guatemala, which included doing a Bible skit for the wonderful kids there as well as meeting the local Christians and serving with Medical Missions. And last but certainly not least, she got lots of time with her family and friends and caught up on sleep! 😊

Cassie is an Interdisciplinary Studies major with a concentration in theatre. She is an active member of the Theatre Club and will be stage managing their production of Little Women, as well as co-designing lights and sound for The Importance of Being Earnest as a Covenant Theatre work-study student.

The first theatre student back on campus was Mara Kate Barker, who is serving as a freshman orientation counselor this week. Mara Kate spent the summer working at Chick-Fil-a, spending time with family, and traveling to locations such as Naples, FL and Albuquerque, NM!

Mara Kate is an English major with a Theatre minor. She will be serving as the President of the Theatre Club for the second year, taking two theatre classes this fall, and directing the Theatre Club’s production of "Little Women." Save the date for the show - October 10!

For our final “What I Did This Summer” from Covenant Theatre’s staff, we find Theatre Program Chair Camille Hallstrom and her cat relaxing in their garden. This summer, Prof. Hallstrom spent a lot of time working on her garden and home in addition to reading plays and starting her preparation for the two productions she’ll be working on this year – playing Lady Bracknell and coaching dialects for The Importance of Being Earnest, and directing Babette’s Feast.

This fall we’ll be celebrating Prof. Hallstrom’s founding of the Theatre Program at Covenant, when she taught the first theatre course at Covenant 25 years ago!

Only two Covenant Theatre staff members left in our “What I Did This Summer” series!

During the school year, Luann Jennings is an Adjunct Professor and the Coordinator of Community Engagement for Covenant Theatre. During the summer, Luann works with the Conference Services department. This was her second summer helping nearly 5,000 people who came to the mountain for camps and conferences.

Luann also started nerding out on research for the production of “The Importance of Being Earnest” that she’ll be directing in the fall. But her favorite summer activity is getting dirty and sweaty in the garden, whether at her home or in the native garden at the downtown public library, where she is part of the volunteer maintenance team.

Next up in our “What I Did This Summer” series from the people of Covenant Theatre: General Manager and Technical Director, Matthew Mindeman!

Matthew had a very busy summer away from Covenant! He got to spend a lot of quality time with his wife, 1 year old son, and new puppy, while picking up various odd jobs cleaning windows and painting. He also finally got to work on a number of projects around his house, while still making time for catching up on movies and games. Amidst all that, he’s been prepping for Blank Page Theatre Company's fall production of Much Ado About Nothing, which he will be both acting in and producing. Come check it out!

Continuing our “What I Did This Summer” series, Martina Ferguson has been very busy, working in theatre all around the Chattanooga area!

Marti acted in the New Play Festival hosted by Chattanooga Theatre Center and Next Exit Productions; designed props and costumes for New Threads Theatre Company’s production of "My Name is Soren Kierkegaard”; taught the Theatre track for Bryan College's 2026 Summer Institute; and just started production stage managing for Blank Page Theatre Company's "Much Ado About Nothing."

We’ve been quiet so far this summer, but we’ve been busy! Here’s the first of our “What I Did This Summer” series, featuring the people of Covenant Theatre!

Adjunct Professor Frank Mihelich has been directing the first production of a new play, My Name is Søren Kirkegaard, by Timothy Andrew Mcintosh. It opens TONIGHT (Thursday, July 23) at the UTC Fine Arts Center. If you’re near Chattanooga, you should go!

Announcing our 2026-27 mainstage productions!

Widely considered the wittiest play ever written in the English language, The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde, will feature Camille Hallstrom as the inimitable Lady Bracknell. To be directed by Luann Jennings. November 11-14, 2026.

Fans of the famous 1987 film won't want to miss the acclaimed stage version of Babette's Feast, to be directed by Camille Hallstrom. Conceived and developed by Abigail Killeen, written by Rose Courtney, and adapted from the short story by Isak Dinesen; produced in association with Dramatic Publishing. February 17-21, 2027.

The last two wonderful Covenant Theatre students we want to introduce to you are Harry Hutto and Lauren Niemeyer.

Harry Hutto is a Sophomore Interdisciplinary Studies major with a primary concentration in theatre. Harry started dabbling in the world of theatre as a joke when he was in high school. Harry wanted to be in one of his friends' senior-directed one-acts, but he wasn't cast. Fortunately for Harry, he ended up getting cast in a far better one-act that kick-started his love for theatre! Harry has been in two senior-directed one acts (in 2023 and 2024), The Play That Goes Wrong, and A Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood, plus a short film that never saw the light of day, LOL. He hasn't yet been able to do a show at Covenant but is ready to be part of Covenant Theatre productions in the upcoming year!

Lauren Niemeyer is a freshman from Oxford, MS. She is a business major with a minor in theatre. Lauren has loved theatre since she was young. She has taken part in many plays throughout her high school career, such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Blue Carbuncle, Death on the Nile, and Harvey. Recently, Lauren played a fairy in Covenant's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Besides theatre, she spends her time on the volleyball court, as an outside hitter for the Lady Scots. Lauren plans to continue her theatre career throughout her years at Covenant and can't wait to see what's to come!
