Back when we started, my sweet, late mother-in-law bought a life-sized dummy to help promote Carebike. Leonard usually created more concern than goodwill but he was always part of the team. His Donald Trump impression sounded like a good idea but I never got brave enough to take him out of the garage. Recently, his face turned green and I think something is nesting in his chest cavity. Happy trails, ol' buddy!

They closed our neighborhood golf course years ago. Recently we residents were encouraged to use the open space. Took my Carebike out the other day to pedal my way through the abandoned fairways. Best workout in years!

Megan has always presented challenges. Most are WAY above my pay-grade. But every once-in-a-while, my limited skills and tenacity are enough to 'fix her wagon'. She has a old shower chair that we still use because it works so well. Recently, she figured out how to release the latch on the chair's lap tray, remove the tray and then eventually weaponize it. We'd had enough. I got $25 of velcro and some fabric straps with the idea of securing the tray in place. The first test ended looking alot like some magician freeing himself from a straight-jacket. Stewing a bit, I realized that modifying the latch was the answer. My dremel tool easily removed the front end of the latch. We can release the tray by reaching a bit further back and pulling the mechanism itself. Megan is still trying, and will eventually, figure that out. Meanwhile no one is getting hurt.

Some time ago, I took a Carebike to a nursing home and gave rides to interested residents. A 100 year-old lady volunteered by quietly raising her hand. As it turned out she didn't speak but as I pedaled and watched out over her her face conveyed that our short ride was taking her to places and memories from long in her past. More often than not Carebike creates magic. This guy must a real good sense of that too.

Having another birthday shifts the focus on the Carebike more toward the aerobic exercise it can provide. Going to pump of the tires, grease the chain and get back at it. I plan to keep you posted.

The four of us took the bike to the west coast to raise funds for ALS. Here's a bit of video that nicely shows the tight turns Carebike can make. It also shows (unfortunately) the tremendous weight capacity of the bike itself.

My girls' Grandmother passed a several weeks ago after suffering through a battle with ALS. To remember her, and help in some small way to prevent others from having to endure that nightmare, Megan and I will be riding the Carebike Saturday over in Tampa to raise money and awareness. Any help to that effort would be greatly appreciated. Here's our page: http://fw.to/KpEvSma

Megan has been working on her Carebike Strider long enough to wear out a good pair of shoes. (never thought that would happen) Yesterday in therapy her PT got her walking using just her arms for support. Check out her excellent progress!

One of the first things I learned about adaptive cycling is that the Europeans seem to take it much more seriously. A good number of us over here had a chance recently to met one of the area’s goodwill ambassadors, when Wendy Hawkins circumnavigated most of Canada and the US in conjunction with her duties with Great Britain’s Special Olympic World Games cycling team. Last Friday night, near the end of her herculean bit of driving, she stopped for dinner at our house. Thanks for all the inspiration, Wendy!

Racerunning is an wonderful activity that came out of Denmark that enables people with mobility issues a chance to exercise and a chance to compete. The folks behind the effort are primarily motivated in helping others, as opposed to only selling Racerunning bikes, that they provide information on how to build a bike of your own. Here's a bit of Megan on her bike during Physical Therapy.

We were riding to get the vote out for Issue 2 on the November ballot. Ma*****na is medicine. And they have just scratched the surface on the benefits it can provide. I am convinced had we had access to this medicine back in 1987, Megan would not be in her wheelchair.
