This is the first year I’ve made work specifically for the holiday season and I’m so happy I did. Making these ornaments was the perfect opportunity to try a printing on clay process I’ve been wanting to explore for quite some time now, monoprint transfers.

If you swipe through the images, starting with the last image first, you can get an idea of how these ornaments came together.

First, I made the ornament out of clay with the addition of a wire hook for the ribbon and a hole at the bottom to assure the ornament wouldn’t explode in the kiln allowing the air to escape the hollow form. Once the ornament was made I began drawing with glaze the illustrations onto paper. After the images were dry I could then transfer the image from the paper onto the clay ornament form using pressure and lots of rubbing, trying to eliminate trapped air bubbles. This was a really fun process and it reminded me of my days in the printmaking studio up at college. Would it have been easier to paint the images straight onto the ornament? Yes. Would the end result look the same? No, similar, but not quite the same. As an artist sometimes we do certain things for the process because that is what excites us. In the end, most will simply see an ornament strung up with black velvet ribbon and images on both front and back, but to me I see the process in which they were created and the pure joy they brought me while making them.

Today is the day! I’m back again with .seattle alongside an incredible lineup of artists and makers and starting at 10am PST I’ll be having a sale through my stories on my other account, . Some Sundays are for relaxing while others are all about getting stuff done. Today is a work day full of making, glazing, carving and raku firing! Anyone else getting things done this weekend? I’d love to hear all about it!

The market is kicking things off right with Josh Hunter of at 9am for some much needed Treat Yo Health Self Care Routine.
