What is Kinetics?

Kineticists are artists and engineers who create kinetic sculptures, imaginatively engineered, human-powered works of art. Kinetic Sculptures race over land and water, propelled only by crew members, and they do so in a uniquely zany style. Every sculpture has a theme, and this theme is reflected in the team's costumes and actions. History of Colorado Kinetics

The late sculptor Hobart Brown start

ed kinetic sculpture racing in Ferndale, CA, in 1969. Ten years later, Boulder firefighter Rick Hartner witnessed the California event and decided to replicate it in Colorado. Kinetics hit the ground rolling on May 3, 1980, and became an annual springtime event. Loss of sponsorship threatened to end the race in 2008. However, fans and participants came together and partnered with the City of Longmont allowing the kineticists to return to the traditional land-and-water race in 2010 at Longmont's Union Reservoir.
