During Crohn's awareness week I want to share some art in hopes it might inspire others to let go of the pain and grief we as humans carry around with us.

Before my surgery for Crohn's in 1992 I was feed intravenously on and off, due to two strictures in my small intestine. The IV bags contained sugars that were cold and stung a bit while entering my blood stream. My veins would often give way causing leakage that would burn, swell and bruise my skin. Eventually I got a hickman catheter, which is a tube that is implanted in one of the arteries of the heart. I was given IV feedings on a daily basis and not allowed to eat. The red band on my wrist represents the blood transfusions I received due to internal bleeding. This self portrait portrays the difficulty of relying on IV feedings in order to survive and the anguish of not being able to satisfy the continuous growling of an unfed stomach.
