watercolor and gouache

๐ณ๐๐๐๐๐๐ is on view in Rooted, a group exhibition exploring the evolution of visual arts in Long Island City over the past 20+ years, at Culture Lab LIC through May 31.
๐ณ๐๐๐๐๐๐ combines two visual quotations: a bird derived from a specimen in the Nature Lab at the Rhode Island School of Design, and a woman from The Raising of Lazarus (1517) by Sebastiano del Piombo.
Having worked in watercolor throughout the late 80s and early 90s, I wanted to measure my skill by entering into Piomboโs process. I was especially drawn to the figureโs white head covering and the gesture of her hand.
Towering over the composition is the bird, representing Lazarus. Since moving to Long Island City in 1983, the birds and plants in my garden have lived both there and throughout my work in watercolor, collage and, for the last 30 years, printmaking.
