Five months ago we welcomed Mimosa Tast (mimosa.tast ) to the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York. Now, it’s time for her to leave New York and new adventures in Finland await. Before she left we asked her a few questions about her time at FCINY.

Mimosa Tast is soon going to be a graduate from LAB University of Applied Sciences, from the Interior Architecture and Furniture Design programme. During her studies she started to produce a Finnish design magazine called Sälä, where she also got to work as a design consultant. This production role sparked Mimosa’s interest in applying to be the Project Coordinator of FCINY.

The fourth episode of Withstanding Podcast season 5 is now out!

In this episode artists Jade Kallio and Mette Sterre are joined in a discussion recorded during their overlapping residencies at ISCP in New York. Although they primarily work in different media and artistic practices, they quickly recognized a shared set of concerns and similarities that run through both of their practices. Creating outside of the boxes of how we understand identity, gender, technology, society norms and the body.

Throughout the conversation, Kallio and Sterre reflect on the role of categorization, why we rely on it, how it structures our social and political realities, and what artistic practice can offer as an alternative. This episode is infused with humor, as this is something Both Kallio and Sterre uses as a tool and strategy when creating. In the second half of the episode, the conversation shifts from process to practice as the artists watch and respond to selections from each other's work.

When Eva-Li Teir was a teenager, her biggest dream was to live in New York. Years later, she finally made it happen! arriving in the city just as Mayor Zohran Mamdani began introducing ideas that might feel surprisingly familiar to a Finn.

From the Finnish maternity box to more accessible childcare, Eva-Li explores what New York could learn from Finland, and what Finland might be missing from New York. Because while Finland may have the happiest people, New York certainly has some of the happiest dogs!

After spending time living between two very different ideas of what makes a good society, one question remains: does the American Dream need a little Finnish touch?

Last fall, we welcomed Elsa Piikki to the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York. Now, it’s time for her to say farewell to New York and embark on new adventures.

Elsa has a Master of Arts with studies in linguistics, film, performing arts, and marketing. Before joining FCINY, she gained experience in both commercial and non-profit organizations, working as a copywriter, communications specialist, and marketing coordinator. She is also a founding member of the Helsinki-based cultural association Mankka, where she has developed a strong DIY approach to cultural production and community building.

During her nine months at the institute, she got to grow from a Project Coordinator into a Producer. In the fall, she learned a great deal about the world of cultural institutes from programming and fundraising to communications, networking, and supporting Finnish artists in New York. And in the spring offered the opportunity to stay for longer. “I didn't have to think twice!” Elsa says in the interview. As her role evolved, she took on more responsibility for producing the institute's Withstanding podcast, event reporting and organizing events and gatherings at the institute.

We are excited to welcome Juliana Hyrri, who will be spending summer in New York as an Artist-in-Residence at Triangle!🍎

Juliana Hyrri is a Helsinki-based interdisciplinary visual artist working across painting, writing, and drawing. Her work explores memory, perception, and the ways inherited images shape our experience of everyday life. Drawing on blurred memories, art history, and everyday observations, her works unfold like palimpsests, with figures, objects, and spaces disintegrating, blending, and reassembling. Recurring motifs form a loose yet distinctive visual language where melancholy and tenderness meet irony and humour.

We can't wait to follow Hyrri's journey here and see what New York has to offer!

We are excited to welcome Ida Kukkapuro to New York! Ida is our designer-in-residence for the summer and will stay in New York from July to September. This residency is organized in collaboration with 3pts.

Ida is the director of Studio Kukkapuro, carrying forward the artistic legacy of her grandparents, designer Yrjö Kukkapuro, one of the most acclaimed in the Nordics, and artist Irmeli Kukkapuro.

A journalist and communications specialist by trade, she hosts an architecture series on YLE, Finnish National Broadcasting company, and a weekly design program on Radio Helsinki.

Over the next three months, Ida will be introducing Yrjö Kukkapuro's work to a new circle of people in New York, architects, manufacturers, journalists and curators. While preparing to open the Kukkapuro studio home to the public in 2027, she'll also be doing study visits to home museums and studios across the city.

We can’t wait to see how Ida takes advantage of New York and what amazing things this will lead to!

Aapo Nikkanen on Hypnosis and Cognitive art.

Now you can read an interview with our Finnish artists-in-residency Aapo Nikkanen, about his time in New York and at Pioneer Works!

Aapo Nikkanen is an artist, researcher, and hypnotherapist. His current work focuses on hypnotic performances and photography.

During his residency he has focused on studying Ericksonian hypnotherapy, which is a conversational method of hypnosis. He has also done both individual and group hypnotic sessions and performances.

In his performances, the guests visit speculative realities through hypnosis. The works address how contemporary systems increasingly operate at the level of cognition, shaping how we interpret, trust, and respond to the world — often bypassing critical reflection.

In his photographic practice, subjects are captured while in a hypnotic trance. Rather than posing for the camera, they inhabit imagined states, producing images that allow temporarty detachement from from the social roles and masks normally shaping one’s behaviour.

We wanted to catch up one last time and discuss what his time in New York has had to offer.

A new 𝘍𝘊𝘐𝘕𝘠 𝘖𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 essay can now be found on our website!

This will be Mimosa Tast’s last observation, and what better way to end then with a reflection on what she has learned during her time in New York, and how it has reshaped the way she sees her home Helsinki.

Laundry in New York has to be scheduled into her calendar, and the commute to work takes as long as travelling from Helsinki to Lahti. Even so, she has come to appreciate New York and the surprises it brought, like a work culture that doesn't pause for summer. One of the biggest takeaways, however, is that she's a small-town girl at heart. And what better time to return home than when the whole country is on summer vacation?

Now you can read an interview with our Finnish artists-in-residency iida and ssi about their spring in New York!

iida and ssi work with film and photography. During their New York spring, they spent a lot of time at Pioneer Works, an arts organization located in Red Hook, Brooklyn, where they had their studio.

During their residency they have been developing a film and photographic project based on New York author Jennie June, whose autobiographies are among the earliest published texts by someone we might today understand as a trans or non-binary. 📖🎥

We caught up with them to discuss their experience in New York and how their research and work has progressed.
