In the 1960’s a gentleman named Dick Swettenham worked as a Service/Design engineer for Abbey Road Studios. In the early 1970’s he began to work for Olympic Studios where he controlled Design and Maintenance. He approached the owners of Olympic stating that if they allowed him to order the necessary parts, he could build a desk that was far more musical than anything available at the time. They ga

ve him the ok, once the desk was completed and commissioned most of the great rock musicians of the era which included Jimi Hendrix, started to book time at Olympic. Most British and some American recording artists were now using Olympic Studios so Chris Blackwell of Island Records decided that if he built a studio around a Helios console he would save money and also have his own studio busy with artists wanting to record on the Helios console. But he was a client of Olympic, it would be impossible for him to request that Dick Swettenham of Olympic to build a console that would be in direct competition with Olympic, so he put up the finance for Dick to go into business. And so Helios was born. Seven consoles were built for Island, which included mobile studios. At this time Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells was selling well for Virgin Records, so Richard Branson had Helios build three consoles one for The Manor Studios, one for the Manor Mobile, and one for Townhouse Studios. The Who built Ramport Studios, around a Helios, The Rolling Stones built the legendary "Rolling Stones Mobile", 10cc built "Strawberry Studios" and so the story goes on, even the Beatles built “Apple Studios” around a green Helios console. The Helios became known as the Musicians Choice of Recording Consoles!

It’s been a rough week here on the Jersey Shore as we lost another LEGEND of the NJ music community this week on Saturday, my dear friend Nick Addeo is now singing with the Angels. Nicky was what Jersey Shore R&B and Doo W*p vocal harmony was all about.

Living on the street at the age of 16, Nicky soon found himself harmonizing with many of the city's young Black vocalists in the hallways of the Boston Way projects. He also connected with the Darchaes and when Ray Dahrouge left for college, Nicky became their lead singer. Buzzy Lubinsky first recorded Nicky leading the Darchaes on "Gloria." A chance meeting with the Plainfield group, the Plazas on the Seaside Heights Boardwalk led to Nicky recording "A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening" with them.
Stormin' Norman Seldin was booking the Uniques when Billy Brown left the group. Norman picked Nicky Addeo to lead the Uniques, making them one of the first Jersey Shore integrated groups. Norman recorded Nicky Addeo & the Uniques on "Over The Rainbow," a true masterpiece of group harmony.
Nicky's contributions to Shore music were far from over at that point. He continued singing with numerous groups as well as performing solo. Nicky's music career established him as one of the true pioneers of the Sound of Asbury Park.

Nick wrote many songs in his long career and two were featured in “The War Of The Roses”and “Hoffa”. Danny DeVito did a short film in the 1980’s called “A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening” which feature the same song title. Later in his life Nick wrote songs about peace, love and bringing people together and worked tirelessly to that end.

There were many sessions with Nick but one of my favorites was working with Dominic Chianese aka Uncle Jr from The Sopranos when we recorded his Italian album and then going to Jimmy‘s Italian restaurant in Asbury Park and having dinner and Dominic tended bar all night long!

He was just a wonderful person that would give you the shirt off of his back and no one sang the Ave Maria like Nick, it was very moving and emotional to hear him sing it. He also had one of the finest tenors voices I have ever had the pleasure to record as his love for Enrico Caruso and Mario Lanza knew no end.

Nicky Addeo's career will be celebrated in the coming Asbury Park Museum, opening in 2027 at 1200 Springwood Avenue. His legacy will be covered in detail in the forthcoming book, "Springwood Avenue Harmony, Vol. 2".

My deepest condolences to Nick’s wife, children, family and friends, it was an honor to know and work with you and to have you had you as a very dear friend. I will miss our conversations about music and life and I will always keep you close to my heart. Until we meet again, rest well.

Joe
