It’s back to school season, and schedules are about to get full! Before you enroll your dancer somewhere, here’s what actually matters: class size, teacher experience, and a trial class you can try before committing.
At Movement Dance Academy, that’s 20 years of experience under owner Lawrence Edwards, who danced for Disney, MTV, and Madison Square Garden before becoming a certified NJ K–12 teacher.
Don’t just register for a dance class, find a home. A place that builds each dancer by creating a strong foundation, character, and discipline. Where technique is nurtured, confidence is grown, and every dancer is seen not just taught. Contact us to set up your free trial class.

MOVEMENT ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT AVA BORRIELLO

We are so proud to spotlight MDA alum Ava Borriello, a Shrewsbury native and graduate of Red Bank Regional High School, who is entering her fourth and senior year at the University of Delaware as a member of the nationally recognized Delaware Dance Team! 💙💛

Ava is majoring in Criminal Justice, with minors in Sociology and Forensic Science, while continuing to compete at the highest level of collegiate dance.

Her journey, however, hasn’t come without adversity.

During her junior year, Ava suffered a major injury that challenged her both physically and mentally. But instead of allowing that setback to define her, Ava used it as motivation. She worked her way back with even more determination and is returning for her senior year ready to leave everything on the floor.

The University of Delaware Dance Team has built an incredible national legacy, earning 9 UDA Division I National Championships, including three consecutive Hip Hop National Championships from 2022–2024. Now competing in the highly competitive Division IA, Delaware finished 6th in the nation in Division IA Hip Hop in 2026.

From growing up at Movement to competing on one of the country’s most accomplished collegiate dance teams, Ava continues to show our dancers what perseverance, commitment, and believing in yourself can accomplish.

We couldn’t be prouder to call you a Movement alum, Ava. Ava Borriello

One more year. One more Nationals. One more chance to bring home the GOLD. 💙💛

Movement has a proven history of developing dancers from the ground up. From their very first class through advanced training, and for those who choose it, into college dance programs and professional opportunities.

We don’t just teach classes.
We develop dancers.

Strong Fundamentals. Disciplined Training. Lifetime Impact.

They’ve watched it from the audience all season…
Now it was their turn. 😏🎬
We challenged our competition parents to perform their dancer’s FAVORITE moment from their routine—and let’s just say… the results did NOT disappoint. 😂🔥

Seems only right to post this as we begin Nationals week.

20 years later, Movement is still here, still creating moments on and off the stage, still building a family, and creating a culture that goes beyond the dance floor.

There were people who doubted me along the way, but I never lost focus on what I wanted to build. I stayed the course, trusted the vision, and kept going.

And to anyone who ever counted me out, keep feeding me that energy.

Proud of where we started, proud of where we are, and even more excited for where we’re going.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Movement alumna Phoenicia Butler, owner of Chasse Center of Dance.

Phoenicia came to me in middle school with little to no dance experience, but she had the drive, determination, and passion to grow. One of her biggest goals at the time was gaining acceptance into the Red Bank Regional Dance Program and that was just the beginning of her journey.

Over the years, she trained hard, continued to learn, and gained the knowledge and experience that ultimately led her down a path very similar to my own. Watching her evolve from a young student searching for confidence and opportunity into a studio owner and mentor for the next generation has been incredibly rewarding and something I am truly honored to witness.

Phoenicia went on to attend University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she earned her B.A. in K-12 Dance Education while performing with the Charlotte 49ers Gold Dusters. She later taught dance within the CMS school district and was recognized as the 2016–2017 Principal’s Award Recipient as well as a 2018 MeckEd Teachers of Excellence Recipient.

She also performed professionally as a member of the Charlotte Hornets Honey Bees from 2020–2022 and has proudly owned and operated Chassé Center of Dance since 2018.

This is what dance is about growth, perseverance, passion, and building something bigger than yourself.

Confidence really is a product of experience, practice, and overcoming challenges. It’s a process that builds character. Each step strengthens us and moves us closer to our goals. Although times it feels like we are not moving closer to our physical goal it’s shaping your character. That is more important than the trick, leap or turn. Your mindset is the true power to progress. You need to be coachable not emotional!

I remind my own kids this all the time — the best coaching isn’t always easy to hear.

I don’t bring in teachers to keep you comfortable.
I bring in people who are going to push you, challenge you, and make you better — as a dancer, an athlete, and most importantly, as a person.

I expect honesty.
I expect consistency.
And yeah… I expect you to be uncomfortable sometimes.

Because if it’s always easy, you’re probably not working to your full potential.

There are going to be moments that hit you.
Moments where you feel frustrated, maybe even want to shut down.

That’s the moment.

You either back off… or you rise up and meet your potential.

Growth doesn’t come from comfort.
Never has.

Trust the process.

I remind my own kids regularly. The best coaching isn’t always the easiest to hear.
I don’t bring in teachers to make you comfortable.
I bring in people who will push you, challenge you, and make you a better dancer, athlete,
and most importantly. A better individual.

I expect honesty.
I expect consistency.
I expect you to be pushed out of your comfort zone.

Because if it’s easy,
you’re not working to your full potential.

There will be moments it breaks you. But that’s the moment you decideto rise up and meet your potential.

Because growth doesn’t come from comfort. Trust the process.
