Celebrating the incredible graduates of the California State University, Long Beach Department of Dance tonight at such a beautiful pre-commencement gathering.

Surrounded by family, friends, faculty, and the community that supported them every step of the way, our graduates were honored for all of the hard work, artistry, passion, and perseverance that brought them to this moment.

The future is bright for this talented group, and we can’t wait to see where their next steps lead. Congratulations, Class of 2026!

The Department of Dance is hosting a SPOT Raffle! If you’ve completed all your SPOT evaluations in Single Sign-On, come to the office by Friday, May 8th to be entered in the raffle!

Winners will be notified on May 11th via email.

Thank you for providing valuable feedback to our instructors so we can continue to support our students!

Prizes:
- 2 tickets per semester for the 2026-2027 Department of Dance concerts (4 tickets total, can be used two for one show or one per show)
- $25 CSULB Bookstore gift card

The Contemporary Dance Concert has 3 more shows left after our sold out opening night!

Photos 1-3 from “Palimpsest” choreographed by Isabella Ladine— “Palimpsest” explores the theme of emotional growing pains and navigates what it means to exist in every age you have ever been.

Photos 4-6 from “Streetlight” choreographed by Dylan Shube— “Streetlight” is a tap improvisational score that explores my internal world of feeling disappointed with where I’m in life in relation to the aspirations I have for myself.

The CSULB Contemporary Dance Concert opens tomorrow (4/23)!

Photos 1-3 from “Broadcast” choreographed by Elisa Murray— “Broadcast” is a psychologically driven narrative that confronts propaganda and manipulated media through a theatrical lens. Using fictional world building and animated design, this piece takes you on a horrifying but whimsical journey.

Photos 4-6 from “You” choreographed by Maya Sabbah— “You” exposes the aftermath effects of the soul becoming fragmented, displayed through the performers’ embodiment of a fragmented itself, blaming the external for internal circumstances whilst the truth of self is suppressed in an experience of conflict to abandon the ego manufactured in physical reality.

April 23-25 at 8pm and a 2pm matinee on Saturday at the Martha B. Knoebel Dance Theater.

The CSULB Contemporary Dance Concert opens this week!

Photos 1-3 from “Sunken City” choreographed by Miriam Nguyen and Miguel Vasquez— Sunken City follows a complex young couple as they navigate the landslide of the Sunken City tragedy in 1929.

Photos 4-6 from “Hands of Time” choreographed by Colin Dean— this piece explores how the unrelenting passage of time, coupled with societal demands, causes us frustration and anxiety, and makes us overwork ourselves without leaving time for relaxation or play.

Meet the undergraduate choreographers of the Contemporary Dance Concert! April 23-25, 2026 at the Martha B. Knoebel Dance Theater.

Elisa Murray:
“Broadcast” is a psychologically driven narrative that confronts propaganda and manipulated media through a theatrical lens. Using fictional world building and animated design, this piece takes you on a horrifying but whimsical journey.

Alexis Gutierrez:
“GRWM (get ready with me)” is based on the phrase “beauty is pain”, and highlights how we have accepted pain as the inevitable part of the female experience.

Laney Patton & Kacey Ura:
“Inyo (陰陽)” explores the Japanese principle of duality— opposing forces aren’t contradictions, but essential components of balance.

Miriam Nguyen & Miguel Vasquez:
“Sunken City” follows a complex young couple as they navigate the landslide of the Sunken City tragedy in 1929.
