The Long Beach Open Studio Tour is coming up! It’s a FREE self-guided tour of artist studios and work spaces- it’s a great opportunity to see where the art is made, talk with artists, and, if you see something you like, buy some art for your collection at studio prices.

4 weekends in October, a different neighborhood each weekend. See https://lbopenstudiotour.com for details.

flux art space is excited to host Nick Norton during the Belmont weekend of the tour ! Join us for Saturday or Sunday, (or both!) October 3 & 4, from 1pm - 5pm.

We will present Nick Norton’s “for Yves, after Hiroshi” an experiential sound installation in the project space… along with collaborative art in the studio with Betsy Lohrer Hall .
Flux Art Space
410 Termino Ave, LB, CA 90814
FREE. All are welcome. 💫

About the Work:

For Yves, After Hiroshi began as a piece of music for harp, clearly (but unconsciously) drawing influence from Hiroshi Yoshimura’s music. As the material was extremely spare and simple I realized it would lend itself to experimentation with layering different tempi to produce otherwise-impossible rhythms.

The results were fascinating, as the layers spread apart or coalesced in ways that echoed the flexible way we perceive time. An hour at a desk can feel like a month; surfing a one-minute wave can feel like an instant.

The piece developed from music into sound installation when I began spatializing it. Depending on your location in the space, you could dip in and out of different tempo streams. I was struck by a similarity to relativity, as how we experience time depends on our location in space, with only references to other clocks in the distance.

Nick Norton makes things out of sound. Electronica.org.uk calls him a “composer and sound artist to be reckoned with” and Last Day Deaf calls his music “absolutely captivating.”

Nick grew up going to shows in the Ventura punk scene, playing guitar in bands, and spending summers on Catalina Island. He went to college at UC San Diego, where he discovered minimalism, noise rock and avant garde classical music, and to grad school at King’s College, London, and UC Santa Barbara. His first LP, Music For Sunsets, was released on people places records.

Nick works as a music editor, audio engineer, and professor. He plays live sets in surround sound and likes travel, sci-fi, dogs, and the ocean.

A warm and heartfelt thank to Gloria Gem Sanchez salleefree and Emma Rault for creating this welcoming place to connect and reflect 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Gloria Gem Sanchez’s installation, “of water + earth + sky” with songs by Stephanie Mushrush (Washoe / Filipina), and readings by Emma Rault (originally from the Netherlands) at the 2026 TRYST art fair produced by TAM Max Presneill with support from City of Torrance CA and ALL the artists and artist-run-spaces, and the community!

Thank you for installation support by UncleAkio salad_ywat h.y.hao and xamity and generosity/neighborliness of members!

Gloria Gem Sanchez’s Statement:

I’m a Pinay-Xicana interdisciplinary artist from the Harbor Area of Los Angeles who works in fibers, sculpture, photography, installation, drawing, and painting. My art is a vehicle to honor my relatives who came before me. I’m inspired by memories, stories, dreams, and motifs gathered from my hybrid cultural identities, spiritual cosmologies, and decolonial way of life. I consider my process to be a posthumous collaboration with my Filipina/ Pinay mother who recently passed, and my Mexican/ Chicano father who was a photographer for many years. I am interested in creating spaces to foster interconnectedness through social practice and community-based art.

Bio:
Gloria Gem Sanchez is a Xicana-Filipina American interdisciplinary artist, arts facilitator, and occupational therapy practitioner. She coordinates Art Education Public Programs at Angels Gate Cultural Center and she is an organizing committee member of the Many Winters Gathering of Elders, a Native led grassroots cohort that brings together Indigenous Elders from across Turtle Island to share traditional teachings with an emphasis on ceremony, spiritual survival, and collective healing.
