Produced by FLOOD, the group that brought Long Beach Soundwalk, PUMP will be the first in a series of biannual events highlighting culture and creativity that will expand on the SoundWalk model. Local experience and identity will be a focus of the first PUMP gathering. Like the inaugural Soundwalk event in 2004, PUMP 2017 will be compact. Its scale will be one that encompasses only a handful of sites, venues, and scenes whose ambience exemplify Long Beach's cultural vibe. Through an array of practices and procedures, artwork will isolate or link, in interesting combinations, various sensory systems and ways of perceiving. Works, both interactive and passive, will include sculptures, environments, installations as well as timed and ongoing performances and presentations. Striving to serve as a conduit of not only local but also of regional and international expressions of imagination and aesthetic practice, each iteration of PUMP will broaden in scope. Our hope is to engender a sense of overlap and tension that will foster, within Long Beach's dynamic art scene, an ecology rich in influence and exchange.
